WLN Announces Table of Contents Service (TOC)

Lacey, Washington. January 8, 1998. WLN announced today that it will=20
offer Blackwell's Table of Contents (TOC) records through its MARC=20
Record Service (MARS). Blackwell's TOCs along with WLN's other MARS=20
services -- including authority control processing -- combine to=20
provide libraries with a complete offering of bibliographic record=20
upgrading and enrichment services.

Libraries may have their MARC records enriched with Tables of=20
Contents, enhancing access to their collections for their staff and=20
patrons. Blackwell's captures Table of Contents, as well as=20
descriptive summaries and author affiliations from newly published=20
books, profiled for their Approval and New Titles Services plus=20
selected Standing Order Titles. The information is for the majority of=20
scholarly monographic titles published since 1991. TOCs are available=20
for U.S./Canadian editions or English language titles since Spring=20
1992 and U.K./European editions of English language titles since the=20
Fall of 1995. The TOC file currently consists of 185,000 records with=20
approximately 800 added each week. Author affiliations are available=20
since Fall 1993. Public libraries as well as academic can benefit from=20
these services.

Through WLN, libraries have the option of receiving Table of Contents=20
data in one of three formats: a basic 505 contents field; an enhanced=20
505 field; or chapter level 9xx field that some local systems can=20
display as a facsimile of a book=92s table of contents page. The basic=20
505 option provides table of contents data in subfield $a of the 505=20
field, in conformance with LC MARC standards. The enhanced 505 option=20
provides table of contents data in subfield $g, $r, and $t of the 505=20
field, enabling more detailed local system indexing than with the=20
basic 505.=20

Libraries that already use WLN's MARS services may add TOCs to their=20
bibliographic records at the same time that records are processed for=20
authority control or other services. The WLN MARC Record Service=20
(MARS) is a complete library database preparation service that=20
includes authority control, customized record processing and=20
bibliographic record upgrading and manual review as well as holdings=20
conversions, item field creation, smart barcode number generation and=20
label production, and, retrospective conversion services. Recently,=20
MARS introduced its Current Authorities Service. After a library has=20
applied automated authority control to its entire database, the WLN=20
Current Authorities Service keeps it all up-to-date. The TOC=20
enrichment service can stand alone or be combined with other MARS=20
services. Libraries not currently using WLN for authority processing=20
may want to consider combining services thereby simplifying procedures=20
and reducing processing and turnaround time. Libraries may send=20
bibliographic records to WLN for authority control processing and TOC=20
enrichment weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. For monthly or more=20
frequent updating, libraries should send records via file transfer=20
protocol (FTP). =20

Paul McCarthy, President and CEO of WLN, said of this new service,=20
"This addition to our MARS service line further fulfills our=20
commitment to providing a range of quality services to libraries. When=20
Tables of Contents are added to bibliographic records, studies show=20
that library patrons receive better service. WLN is committed to=20
assisting libraries in providing better service."=20
