The University of Northern Iowa seeks a creative, experienced, and
forward-thinking librarian to lead a department with a long tradition of
providing high quality reference services and dynamic, effective
library instruction. This position is vacant due to retirement.
Providing general informational and reference services for business,
education, the humanities (except for art and music), the social
sciences, documents and maps, and the natural sciences, the department
is composed of 7 library faculty, 3.25 FTE staff, and approximately
20 students. Library faculty and staff from other departments also
serve at the reference desk and participate in the library's instruction
program.
The department head will provide leadership in the development of
policies and procedures relating to user services; will oversee the
training and scheduling of personnel serving at the reference desk; will
work closely with the library administration and other department heads
to plan, implement, and coordinate library programs and policies; will
provide oversight of and act as a resource person for a very active
library instruction program in conjunction with the Library Instruction
Coordinator; and will be responsible for evaluation of the
services provided by the department. Reference librarians also serve as
bibliographers, and in that capacity report formally to the Head,
Collection Management and Special Services Department. This is a
faculty position; in order to be tenured and promoted, library faculty
must have earned a second graduate degree by their sixth year of
employment.
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent; at least
five years' progressively responsible professional experience in an
academic library setting, including at least two years of administrative
and/or supervisory experience in reference or instructional services;
demonstrated broad knowledge of traditional and newly emerging
reference, informational, and instructional resources, services, and
technologies; demonstrated commitment to public services;
demonstrated strong and effective written and oral communication
skills; evidence of professional involvement and scholarly activity.
Preferred: second graduate degree (required for tenure).
Reports to: Associate Director of Library Services
Salary: Salary range at appointment: $ 50,000 to $ 55,000 with
comprehensive benefits including TIAA/CREF. Rank commensurate
with credentials and experience. Full-time, tenure-track position.
The Library:
Rod Library has a collection of 811,000 volumes, 661,000 microforms,
535,000 documents, 41,000 maps, 11,978 recordings, and more than
3,000 periodical subscriptions. Faculty and staff of 57 [FTE] assisted
by 25 students [FTE]. The Library has employed an Innovative
Interfaces Integrated Online Library System since 1989. For further

TO APPLY: To obtain an application and schedule an examination
appointment, contact Brenda LaFave at (562) 940-8434, Monday
through Friday, Between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Examinations will
be conducted at the County of Los Angeles Public Library Headquarters,
located at 7400 East Imperial Highway, Room 223, Downey, California.
This examination will remain open until the needs of the service are met.
The next scheduled examination is on Friday, October 10, 1997.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: A Master of
Library Science degree - completion of 36 graduate quarter units in a
library science curriculum leading to a Master of Library Science degree.
LICENSE: A California Class "3" Driver's License may be required.
VACANCY INFORMATION: The resulting eligible list for this examination
may be used to fill permanent positions at facilities throughout the County
of Los Angeles.
EXAMINATION INFORMATION: This examination will consist of an
interview covering training, experience, personal fitness and general
ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.
Candidates claiming Veterans Credit must present a copy of their
honorable discharge or Certificate of Service (DD214) at the time of filing.
EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTATION: Immigration law requires that all
persons hired after November 6, 1986, are required to present original
documents to the County which show satisfactory proof of: 1) Identity
and 2) U.S. Citizenship or a legal right to work permanently in the United
States.
