Please join us for a managed discussion at the LITA Distributed Systems
and Networks Interest Group on Sunday, June 29, 1997 from
9:30am-11:00am at the San Francisco Marriott, Yerba Buena 5.
The major topic of discussion will be the special needs this interest
group can fill for LITA and ALA, or the possibility of merging our
efforts with other interest groups. At out Mid-Winter meeting we
identified several areas of continuing interest:
1 -- Assessment of client/server as we now see it in libraries,
measured by: cost of ownership and cost
of benefit; downtime of various pieces; staff productivity;
system functionality; training
2 -- Web issues: is the web front-end as universal as we think due to
local versions and
customizations?; have we taken a simple product like HTML and
made it too complex by adding
features and has it been a net gain?.
3 -- Basics of client/server environment: should this interest group
provide guidance and information for
those libraries that have not yet moved to this environment?
4 -- Management of a client/server environment: what should reside on
the server and what on the
client?; security issues, especially remote user authentication;
networked printing; back-up
concerns; utility of client and how much capacity is really
needed, especially if the major purpose is
to interpret HTML code; how do you know to whom problems are to
be sent in a distributed system?
Many of these topics also seem to be relevant to interest groups
dealing with research, telecommunications, secure systems and distance
education and indeed some of these groups meet at the same time.

here.
