Welcome to the real world, Vigdor. Resources are tight on
campuses, and your website would violate the acceptable
use policy here and elsewhere. (Providing political
information is a no-no, since a state university has to
carefully remain non-partisan) I would guess that more than
MD citizen has questioned UMD on the appropriateness of
use of state resources.
As to the idea of producing a CDROM, I'd bet you'd get much
more bang for your buck and make a bigger impact on more
people than you'd ever get with a CD if you spent the same
small number of bucks on a website from a website provider
or ISP. The back ads of all sorts of net and web mags have
ads where you can have your website for only twenty or thirty
bucks a month. I know I pay 40 a month for my website at
http://www.84.com/ (very soon to be modified and changed in
content), and that includes 150 hours a month of net
connection time and 4 email addresses, plus other
miscellaneous goodies. There is no reason you even have to
choose a website provider that is the same as your ISP.
Even a technopeasant should be able to dig up 40 a month in
cash on contributions alone if the cause has ANY interest to
others. Again, if your cause has much support at all, then
you'll also have dozens of volunteers volunteeriing to pretty up
the ascii into something that looks nice on the web.
Meanwhile, plain ascii is readable. And, since much of your
stuff is on a website already, the move should be simple from
one to another. Getting Vigdor.com is quick and easy (and
available as of this moment). It costs a hundred bucks for
two years, plus a fee your ISP will add on....typically 50-100
bucks as a one time charge. Mine charged 75.
So, don't mess with silly CDROMS that only a few would
read....go public for less money.
