Are backup catalogues needed?

The University of Leeds Libraries currently use the GEAC GLIS 9000
library automation system, but we will be switching over to Innovative
Interfaces Inc. (III) in the summer.
At present we provide a simple backup catalogue (not linked to the
circulation database) whenever the main GEAC catalogue is unavailable.
We expect that the III system will be (almost) 100% reliable, apart
from network problems, and we are therefore considering whether it is
worth providing a backup system for III.
Do other libraries provide a backup system for their catalogue? If
not, what measures do you take when your system is unavailable? We
would be particularly interested to hear from other libraries that
have recently switched from GEAC 9000 and/or to Innovative.
Please send replies direct to me, and I will collate them for the
list.
