Full-time Position

The Exploratorium is a museum dedicated to the public understanding of
science, art, and human perception.  Founded in 1969 by Frank
Oppenheimer, it has pioneered the role of museums as active teaching
centers with original exhibitry and innovative programming based on an
interactive approach to learning.  It serves as an interdisciplinary
resource for schools, universities, scientists, and artists as well as
for the public.

SUMMARY
The Information Resources Department oversees the Museum's Learning
Facilities, Intranet, and Archives and is part of the Internet
Development and Maintenance Team.  This position manages the Learning
Facilities, which consist of the Learning Resources Room, and Learning
Studio. The Learning Resources Room is a multimedia resource and teacher
reception center. Over 6000 books, videos, professional and science
journals, CDs and laserdiscs are available to a wide network of staff and
K-12 teachers.  The Learning Studio is an experimental multimedia
development space.  Both facilities will be used by K-12 teachers, staff
and the general public.  The Learning Center Facilities Manager will
manage these facilities and, with the support of other museum
departments, especially the Center for Teaching and Learning, maintain
all hardware and software in them.  The position calls for someone who
has a combination of strong information skills, strong technical
abilities and the excellent communication skills needed to develop and
promote the use of instructional multimedia materials.  This position
reports to the Director of Information Resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Hiring, supervising, training Learning Center staff
Assisting and standing in for the department head when necessary
Participating in the design of the prototype and permanent Learning
Center Facilities
Coordinating the development, usage, and management of the print and
non-print resources used by Learning Center participants (teachers, staff
and public), including text files, digitized stills, audio files and
Quicktime movies, interactive laserdiscs, audio and video recordings,
CD-ROMs, resources available through the Internet, and multimedia
software.  Particular emphasis will be given to the development of the
usage of non-print, interactive materials in instruction
Assisting users with software which creates, manipulates and refines
multimedia images and products
Locating, transmitting and storing electronic text and images
Providing assisted Internet access; routinely exploring the Internet to
target, investigate, evaluate, and link to new resources
Supporting and evaluating the use of innovative technologies in teaching
and learning, and working closely with museum departments supporting
educational technologies
Providing training in a variety of settings including one-on-one,
hands-on, group lecture, and by electronic distribution of lessons across
the network
Managing volunteer participation in Learning Center
Performing basic technical support of Learning Center; troubleshooting
and responding to simple software and hardware problems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Skilled in using and teaching multimedia production software such as
Photoshop, Screenplay, Premier, Macromind Director
Experience with electronic reference service
Demonstrates a vision of and enthusiasm for the future of electronic
technologies
Ability to identify and locate resources through both electronic and print
sources
Ability  to train at a variety of levels (novice to advanced), and to a
variety of audiences (general to discipline-specific), using a variety of
software, hardware, and  presentation devices.
Commitment to responsive and innovative service
Ability to work effectively in a team setting
Managerial skills
Experienced in writing and designing training materials
Aware of specialized needs of teachers and where multimedia could best be
used in instruction
Experience in education or public services, learning resources center, or
a computer  center
Knowledge of performing arts or media studies, or educational technology;
ability to demonstrate multimedia communications and design skills
through project samples
English proficiency required, plus strong oral communication and
managerial skills

Position Available:             Systems Librarian
                                Regular/Full-time staff position
                                 (12 month)

Summary of Responsibilities:
To 1) to provide automation consulting, by planning, analyzing,
evaluating all library automation efforts; 2) in coordination with the
Information Systems Department (IS), to install, configure, and maintain
the applications on the library's segment of the University's network and
maintain all the library computer equipment and peripherals; and 3) to
handle special or complex technical problems or projects which require
special technical skills and knowledge and knowledge of electronic
library resources.

Qualifications:
Requirements include: an ALA-accredited master's degree in librarianship,
formal coursework in CS/DP/IS, and minimum of 4 years directly related
work experience, working knowledge of TCP/IP, MARC, and Z39.5, experience
with MS Windows in a networked environment, understanding of SQL and
Unix. Must be familiar with librarianship and information systems
principles, automated library applications, electronic information
resources and standards, computer network hardware and software, and have
strong troubleshooting skills.  Strong communication skills and customer
service orientation essential.
