Environment:
The University of Delaware's attractive main campus is located in suburban
community of 30,000 and is within easy reach of the cultural resources of
Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington. The University of
Delaware provides a broad range of technological resources and received the
CAUSE award recognition of its technologically advanced campus network. The
University of Library is comprised of the 3,000 seat Morris Library and four
branch libraries. The collections include over 2.2 million volumes, over 2
million microforms, and over 5000 films and videos. The Library provides
access to more than 50 bibliographic and full text Library Networked Databases
and access to a full range of World Wide Web resources available from
outside the Library via the campus network. The University of Delaware Library
is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Coalition
for Networked Information, the Center for Research Libraries and PALINET. More

Job Description:
The University of Delaware Library seeks a dynamic, creative, service
oriented individual who enjoys working with technology and has strong
organizational and supervisory skills to manage the Media Services Department
consisting of three service areas: media (video and film), microforms, and a
microcomputing site. The Head of the Media Services Department is one of four
department heads reporting to the Assistant Director for Library Public
Services.Responsibilities include organizing and promoting the use of Media
Services Department collections and services, and working cooperatively
with others to coordinate services and develop collections within
established Library priorities. The Media Services Department consists of
11 staff,in addition to the Head,including two librarians, nine support
staff, and numerous students who provide collection maintenance and user
services in media, microforms, and the microcomputing site.The Media
collection consists of over 5,000 video and film titles which are
scheduled for classroom viewing using an online scheduling system,33
audiovisual carrels,a multimedia workstation,a 49-seat media viewing
room. The Head of Media Services has collection development responsibilities
for selection of materials in video and film and is responsible for working
with faculty from all academic departments, the professional librarian who
coordinates the media unit, and other librarian subject selectors to
identify video and film materials in support of classroom instruction to add
to the Library collections. Users access electronic resources in the Morris
Library workstations in the Reference Room,from the Library Microcomputing
Site and from four workstations in the Media Services Department.
Microforms consists of over 2 million microforms, nine microform reader
printers, numerous microform readers,four networked computer workstations
which provide additional user access to the World Wide Web, Library
Networked Databases and access to CD ROM materials physically housed in
Microfoms and a networked GIS/Digital Mapping workstation with color
printer. The Head of Media Services Department works jointly with staff
from the University's Information Technologies division to administer the
Library Microcomputing Site, which consists of 50 networked IBM and
Macintosh computers,and is one of 30 University Microcomputing Sites on
the University campus. The Department Head works closely and cooperatively
with other department heads in a rapidly changing technological
environment, advises the Assistant Director for Library Public Services on
Media Service programs and policies, and participates in Public Services
Division policy formulation.
Qualifications
Required: ALA accredited M.L.S. degree. Strong service orientation and
administrative ability. Minimum four years experience as a professional
librarian. Three years experience coordinating service or supervising
staff involved in providing services to users in a busy,technological
environment. Demonstrated ability to coordinate substantial video and film
collection development and services. Excellent interpersonal communication
and instructional presentation skills and demonstrated ability to maintain
effective working relationships with library staff and users. Flexibility
and ability to work with users and staff with a variety of information
needs.Ability to promote the services of the department within the service
structure of the Library. Knowledge of service issues and copyright
policies related to video, film, microform, and other non-print materials.
Preferred: Strongly prefer experience with video and film in a service
environment in a academic library. Prefer experience with multimedia
workstations, GIS/Digital Mapping stations, microform digitizers, and other
types of electronic library technology. Experience working closely with
faculty and students in an academic setting. Familiarty with Internet
resources related to areas served by the Media Services Department.
Salary: Senior Assistant Librarian: minimum $30,671; Associate Librarian:
minimum $34,325. Prefer to hire at the Associate Librarian level.

BIOLOGY LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, and working cooperatively
with the Life Sciences Division Coordinator, the Biology Librarian is
chief administrative officer of the Biology Library. The UIUC Biology
Library holds a working collection of over 113,000 volumes including more
than 2000 serial titles, and is actively collecting electronic resources.
Botany, Entomology, and Ornithology are particularly outstanding. The
collection supports the teaching and research needs of the School of Life
Sciences and the Departments of Biophysics; Cell & Structural Biology;
Ecology, Ethology & Evolution; Entomology; Microbiology; Neuroscience;
Molecular and Integrative Physiology; and Plant Biology. With primary
responsibility for the Biology Library's public service, instruction,
collection development, and technical services activities, the librarian
hires and supervises staff, oversees the budget, interprets general
library policy, and along with other staff members, provides reference
services and research assistance to the library's clientele. Coordinates
all aspects of collection development in the Biology Library and works
closely with School of Life Sciences faculty to assure that the Library's
programs, services, and collections meet the needs of faculty and
students. Develops electronic resources and services, both local and
remote, and fosters the incorporation of these resources into the ongoing
scholarly activities of library users. Serves as liaison with other
University Library units, librarians, and with faculty, visitors, and
students. The Biology Librarian also represents the Biology Library in
local, national, and international activities, and encourages the
planning and implementation of programs of resource sharing and
cooperative collection development with other regional and national
library programs. May participate in the preparation of proposals for

Qualifications:
Required: ALA accredited MLS. Minimum of three years professional,
post-MLS experience in an academic research library, including
collection development. Knowledge of the information needs of scholars
in the life sciences, as demonstrated by professional library experience
in the areas served. Knowledge of new technologies and their applications
to enhancing information services. Superior oral and written
communication skills. One year of supervisory experience in a comparable
library setting. Ability to work cooperatively and collegially with
colleagues, students, and academic faculty in a complex, changing, and
multicultural environment. Evidence of research orientation and ability
to meet university standards for promotion and tenure. Leadership skills,
including the ability to manage change in a positive manner. Preferred:
Strong service orientation. Graduate or undergraduate degree in the
biological or life sciences.
Salary & Rank:
Salary $38,000 or higher, depending on credentials and experience. Tenure
track appointment as Assistant Professor or tenured appointment as
Associate Professor. Librarians have faculty rank and must demonstrate
excellence in librarianship, research, publication, and
university/professional/community service in order to meet university
standards for promotion and tenure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintenance of Novell CD-ROM LAN and other electronic
information systems in library; internal library computer
support (hardware and software); staff and user training;
coordination of electronic information services including
stand alone and networked CD-ROM, online databases, and
Internet access. Provides leadership in enhancing library
services through innovative use of available technology and in
identifying potential new access technologies. Position may
include supervision of Interlibrary Loan and electronic
document delivery.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in network management and microcomputer hardware
and software; knowledge of MS DOS, Windows, Novell Netware,
Netscape required; knowledge of Macintosh, UNIX-based systems,
Windows NT, ethernet, NOTIS integrated library system, OCLC
preferred. Library experience preferred. Good communication
