         Assistant Librarian for Information Technology

/* This position was first posted on the list a month */
/* or so ago but it contained an incorrect closing date. */

Under the direction of the Associate Librarian for Automated Systems,
introduces and integrates information/learning technologies into the
library and campus environment. This position will also participate
in the development and support of a variety of PC-based multimedia
applications. Working with the Library Systems Office, this position
will also be actively involved in developing networked information
technology solutions. The Assistant Librarian for Information
Technology directly supervises the Media Services librarian and
one technician.

This position offers an excellent advancement opportunity for library
microcomputer specialists--particularly those who want to work with
local area networks, emerging multimedia technologies, and so on.
The Library Systems Office has long been active in applying small-
systems technology to a variety of library tasks and this position
will focus on expanding these efforts to bring innovation to both
traditional AV services as well as emerging information/learning
technologies.

An ALA-accredited MLS is required as is experience with
microcomputers. Experience with Novell networks is preferred as is
skill with at least one high level language (Pascal, BASIC, C or
C++). Experience with instructional media or appropriate coursework
is desirable but a sound knowledge of microcomputers and networking,
coupled with an interest in information technology could be
substituted. Innovative librarians interested in the challenges of
technology are encouraged to apply. George Mason University is an
AA/EEO employer.

 Salary: $ 25,000 - $ 33,000 based on qualifications.

Benefits include: 24 days vacation annually, 10.5% of salary
contributed by state for retirement (TIAA-CREF and six other
options), hospitalization (BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD), and life
insurance.

Position available October 1, 1992. Deadline for applications is
September 30, 1992.

(NOTE: my original posting of this position in late July gave
September 1 as the closing date for applications for the
position. I've been set straight and want to advise all potential
applicants that the 'actual' closing date is September 30th!).
