BROAD FUNCTION:
The University of Pennsylvania Library System is looking for a librarian
with the knowledge, energy and vision to make the Fisher Fine Arts Library
one of the premier libraries in the field. This will involve building the
already strong print and electronic collections, leading an initiative to
create digitized image collections to support research and teaching, and
developing services for the changing educational environment of the 21st
century.
CONTEXT:
The Fisher Fine Arts Library is located at the center of campus in a
National Historic Landmark building. It houses Penn's collections in the
areas of architecture, city planning, historic preservation, the history
of art, landscape architecture, the studio arts and urban design. The
Fine Arts Library serves the information needs of the Graduate School
of Fine Arts, the School of Arts and Sciences and the entire University
community. The Library places a high priority on developing its
collections of digitized images and already has a successful and rapidly
developing program to build this collection while supporting the current
teaching programs.
SCOPE OF UNIT:
The Fine Arts Library contains approximately 110,000 volumes, 900 current
serials, a Slide Collection of over 300,000 items, as well as the Perkins
Library, a fine collection of more than 2,000 rare architectural books. The
materials allocation for FY 97 is $336,550. In addition to the Librarian
there are 5 full-time non-professional staff members, 6 FTE student
assistants, a Slide Librarian and 3.5 FTE staff members who work
exclusively with the Slide Collection. The Fine Arts Librarian reports to
the Director for Public Services and works closely with the Director for
Collection Development.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Work closely with faculty and the staff of the Graduate School of Fine
Arts and the Department of the History of Art (School of Arts and
Sciences) to develop the Library's services and collections of print and
electronic resources including digitized image collections. Work
collaboratively with the Library's bibliographers for humanities,
area studies and anthropology/archaeology to ensure coordination of
collections. Provide reference and bibliographic assistance to faculty,
staff, students and other patrons of the Fine Arts Library, including
orientation and instruction in the use of print and electronic resources.
Design operating policies for the Fine Arts Library and oversees daily
operation of this facility. Supervise full-time staff and provide
general direction to full-time staff in supervising student assistants.
In coordination with the Slide Librarian and staff in the Library's Center
for Electronic Text and Image, plan the development of the digitized
image collections. Provide general guidance for the operations of the
Slide Library. Manage the print collections of the Fine Arts Library,
reviews material for preservation and for transfer to the Library's
off-site storage facility. Participate in library-wide committees and
task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent in theory and
practice. Advanced degree in an appropriate subject, or equivalent in
theory and practice essential. Understanding of scholarship in art
history, architecture and related disciplines. Knowledge of print and
electronic resources in appropriate fields. Knowledge of developing
electronic information resources and their library applications required.
Familiarity with developments in digitization of images. Strong desktop
computing skills desirable. Good reading knowledge of appropriate
European languages especially French, German and Italian very important.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated
ability to work effectively, independently and cooperatively with
faculty, students and library staff.
SALARY & RANK:
Appointment as Librarian III requires 3-5 years of professional library
experience (starting salary: $32,857 - $42,591), and appointment as
Librarian IV requires a minimum of 5 years of professional library
experience (starting salary: $36,050 - $46,814).
