Ariadne is a free, academically funded, Web-based journal for the UK
Higher Education communities, especially those people working in, or
affected by changes in or to, library, network and information services of
all kinds. Ariadne has now grown to have a more global perspective and
coverage, and there is much to interest non-UK librarians, academics,
students and networked-resource users.
Ariadne issue 8 is now out, and contains...
* A night in the life of the Electronic Telegraph - Emma Worsfold sits in
on the editors' shift at the ET.
* CEI Looks for Bold Response - John MacColl describes the new call for
proposals for further eLib programme work
* The Paper House of Cards (and why it's taking so long to collapse) by
Stevan Harnad
* COPAC: the new nationally accessible Union Catalogue - Shirley Cousins
introduces COPAC
* Elib project updates and descriptions, from the JEDDS, MODELS, RUDI and
WoPEc projects
* Digital Australia (part one of two) - Australia is the home of several
digital library projects, many of whom are tackling problems and
attempting to implement systems similar to some eLib projects. In this
section, 5 such projects are featured
* From MERCI to DESIRE: European Digital Library Projects - by Dave
Hartland
* Performance and Security - Notes for System Administrators - by Andy
Powell
* Regular columns, including Public Libraries (Guest author for this
issue), Web Access for the Disabled, Wire, Search Engines (looking at
'Push' technology), Down your Way (the Natural History Museum), and
several others.
* At the Event - pointers to two forthcoming events that heavily involve
