UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES, COORDINATOR OF THE MUSIC LIBRARY:
Responsibilities: Administer and plan the programs and daily operations of
the Music Library and serve as reference librarian in the branch.
Relocation to a new facility will begin this summer which will increase
existing space and include the music listening lab. Maintain a close
relationship with branch library administrators and the Moores' School of
Music faculty. Supervise, train, and evaluate the employees of the Music
Library. Provides service at the Reference/Electronic Publications Center
desk, including some weekend and evening hours. Librarian duties include
collection development (print and electronic), library instruction, and
faculty liaison in humanities. Participate in various library and
university activities, including involvement with committees and task forces.
Requirements: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school and
Bachelor's degree or higher in Music required. Excellent communication
skills and strong service orientation essential. Desire to work in an
environment where services are expanding and where there is considerable
scope for planning and implementing new program initiatives, including the
application of new technologies to the delivery of services.
Salary: $31,000. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available;
released time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.
Library Information: The Libraries are a member of the Association of
Research Libraries, hold over 1.8 million volumes, with a current materials
budget of $4.2 million. Total staff includes 46 professionals and 170

Available: July 1, 1997
RESPONSIBILITIES: Within a collaborative environment, provides creative
leadership to plan, develop, implement, and coordinate library automated
activities. Manages the Libraries' Systems team (2 faculty and 6 staff),
which is responsible for operational support for computer hardware,
software, and networks dedicated to library functions, including the
integrated client-server system, local area network, remote services, and
approximately 450 computer workstations. Reporting to the Dean of
Libraries and serving as a member of the Libraries Management Group, the
head of Systems works cooperatively with faculty and staff of all library
units in our distributed computing environment. Provides liaison with
campus computing and telecommunication units.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: An ALA-accredited MLS and at least 5 years
experience in library systems in an academic library. Demonstrated
managerial ability and leadership skills. Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, commitment to collaborative work environment, and an
ability to handle multiple priorities in a library embracing advanced
information technologies. Demonstrated competence in LAN/WAN,communication
protocols, and client-server technology. Familiarity with multiple
operating systems, such as Windows 3.x, Windows95, WindowsNT, OS/2,
Macintosh, Unix, and multiple network protocols, such as TCP/IP, Novell,
DecNet. This is a tenure-track appointment requiring the ability to meet
promotion and tenure criteria. Preferred: Systems experience in a large
academic or ARL library.
OPPORTUNITIES: Current implementation of Ameritech's Horizon
client-server system, with public use expected early in FY 1997-98, offers
the opportunity to facilitate development and utilization of a
new-generation integrated system. The Libraries has recently implemented
SilverPlatter's ERL for database searching and is investigating other
server-based systems for information delivery.
BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the
rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per
month. Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF.
Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are paid for the
employee by the University. Group health and life insurance plans are
available. Tuition remission is available for all university employees;
partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children
and spouses of UT employees.

Diablo Valley College is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and
service-oriented librarian for a full-time (10 month per year),
tenure-track position beginning August 1997. This position is ideal for a
librarian with excellent written and oral communication skills who is
team-oriented, flexible, and able to work both independently and
collaboratively in a fast changing environment. The person filling this
position will have primary responsibility for coordinating the library
instruction program and for providing instruction in the use of the
library to students, faculty, and the college community. This position is
also responsible for regularly scheduled hours at the reference desk and
collection development in assigned subject areas.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Recent experience in the preparation and presentation of general and subject-
oriented library instruction in a classroom setting, including use of online
catalogs, CD-ROMs and the Internet.
Demonstrated ability to teach information literacy skills and Internet skills
in a classroom setting.
Experience in developing bibliographies and library and information skills
guides in print and electronic formats.
Demonstrated ability to access information via electronic information
retrieval systems, online library catalogs, and the Internet.
Experience as a reference librarian.
Experience preparing library and information skills guides for distribution on
the World Wide Web.
Experience in selecting print and non-print materials for library collections.
Demonstrated sensitivity to, and ability to work with, diverse racial, ethnic,

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Annual salary range for first year librarian is from $31,740 to $53,172

LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT
Provides instruction and support for library related applications of
microcomputer based technologies and the Internet in a state-wide library
network. Duties include supporting libraries sharing two CD-ROM-based
bibliographic databases; consulting on library automation planning and
implementation in small libraries; consulting about networked information
services, including Internet, WWW, and HTML; and conducting group
presentations and teaching library microcomputer automation and Internet
application workshops.
QUALIFICATIONS: MLS Degree and three years library microcomputer
experience, including local library systems and hardware/software;
knowledge of MARC; database creation and maintenance; proven skills in
HTML and other Internet-related training; history of working with
librarians in a consulting capacity; working knowledge of PCs and
peripherals, and Internet; effective oral, written and interpersonal
communication skills; demonstrated analytical and organizational skills.
Desirable: experience in developing and supporting community information
