"What Internet Workshops to Offer...?": Results of survey

Many thanks to the 37 of you who responded with your "votes" about which
of the several workshops being considered for Library Solutions' June 26-27
(before ALA in SF) "Internet Cafeteria" you'd rank as most desirable if
we had limited space.
Here are the results:
The 8 possible sessions you were asked to rank order (5 high, 1 low) were:
Internet Basics
Finding It Fast on the Internet (Search techniques...)
How to Teach--to Groups
How to Teach--One-on-One
How to Teach--Using a Variety of Technologies to Enhance Your
Presentation
Practical HTML
Web Site Design and Maintenance
Confronting the Internet's Ethical Issues
Neutral Questioning (Interviewing techniques)
For the most part there was widespread agreement among the respondents,
whose addresses indicated the following:
18 were from higher ed instituttions (.edu), 10 from public libraries, 2
from special government agencies, 6 .com, 1 .net
"Musts" (ranked mostly 4-5) were:
Finding It Fast
All 3 How to Teach (with highest scores going to "Using a Variety
of Technologies...)
Web Site Design and Maintenance
OK to very OK (average ranking 3-4):
Practical HTML
Split (mostly 1's from .edu and .com respondents and a few 4's and 5's
from public libraries):
Internet Basics
Ethical Issues (ranked high by several public library respondents and
one .com, mostly 1's and two 2's by all others)
Don't bother (mostly 1's):
Neutral Questioning (disappointing to me, since it's a personal
favorite of mine...)
Suggestions for other workshops [in some cases very paraphrased;
apologies if I missed your meaning!]:
>How to serve the information needs of economic development professionals,
government leaders and small business people via the Internet
>How to package in a user-friendly manner the information you find from
a variety of sources on the Internet for your clients.
>Confronting the Internet's legal issues
>How to set up an Internet Information help desk to assist the public
in finding and using great sources on the Internet
>How to design and deliver Internet-based instruction
>How to interview and listen to those for whom you are designing Web
pages so that you don't spend many hours preparing the look and content
based on what you understood they wanted only to find you were way off
the mark; how to match their expectations about design, time required
to do the job (and price) with yours.
>Evaluating Internet-based resources
Based on your responses, as well as those from people we contacted by
phone (and who, on balance, agreed with you), we've planned the following
workshops for the June program:

How to Teach--In Groups
How to Teach--One-on-One 5-20 Minute Instruction
How to Teach--Using a Variety of Technologies to Enrich Your Presentation
Practical HTML for Beginners
