Subject: POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT (The Michigan Electronic Library)
The Michigan Electronic Library is hiring a Collection Development
Specialist in the area of Business, Labor & Economics. The position will
require approximately 10 hours per week and pays $12.50/hour. Specialists
set their own work hours and space and need not be in Ann Arbor or in the
state of Michigan.
Requirements: MLS or equivalent; business reference and collection
experience; sophisticated web searching ability; HTML.
In this position you will use web search tools, listservs and other
avenues to identify, evaluate, select and add sources in the area of
business, labor & economics. You will be responsible for keeping URLs
current and for advising MEL users in this field. You will also be
expected to promote this MEL collection in the business community and
related organizations and institutions via email, mailings and
presentations at meetings and conferences.

The City of Hialeah Library Division is accepting applications for the po=
sitions of Librarian I and Librarian II. At this time we have one Librari=
an I opening and will have two additional openings for Librarian II very =
soon. All three of these openings will be the result of retirements (two=
of the employees retiring after 25 years of service).

We are looking for creative, energetic, qualified applicants with experie=
nce in network administration, children's services, cataloging and techni=
cal services, or public library services.

Hialeah, Florida is centrally located in the greater Miami area and has a=
population of over 200,000. In Hialeah, 90% of the population is Spanis=
h-speaking or bilingual. The Miami area has a dynamic economy, wonderful=
beaches, a tropical climate, international cuisine, and a variety of cul=
tural activities.

The JFK Library is the main public library for the City of Hialeah. The C=
ity also maintains one branch, the Lua A. Curtiss Branch Library. Remode=
ling and automation of our library was completed slightly over a year ago=
=2E The library has over 75,000 books (over 7000 in the Spanish Collectio=
n), 700 videos, 300 audio books, and 10,000 music CD's. In the past 4 ye=
ars, our library book budget has increased exponentially, from $35K to $1=
66K. The library is very heavily used by the community, especially for e=
ducational information needs. It is not uncommon to have 600-800 patrons=
a day in the library.

Our library computer system; consisting of Galaxy Library Automation Soft=
ware, over 12 networked CD ROM products, Microsoft Office Suite, and (soo=
n to be) Internet access; runs on a state of the art Windows NT 4.0 LAN. =

Salary range for Librarian I is $20,020-$40,378. Salary range for Librar=
ian II is $23,814-$46,254. Starting salary will be based on qualificatio=
ns and experience. All positions are full-time civil service positions w=
ith extensive benefit packages. Requirements: All applicants must be a =
US citizen or a legal resident alien. All applicants must have a Master =
of Library Science from an ALA accredited school of librarianship. Prefe=
rred: Spanish language skills, public library experience, computer exper=

Subject: Position: Head, Reference Department
University of Rochester seeks a librarian with leadership skills and vision,
grounded in a strong imperative for service, to direct Reference
Department programs in the social sciences and humanities. This position
focuses on the development of library programs in support of instruction,
research, and writing as linked processes benefitting from dialogue and
critical thinking. The Department Head guides and fosters the development
of 7 reference librarian/subject specialists and 3 support staff so that,
together -- by engaging the community -- the department performs an active
academic role in the learning, the teaching, and the research life of the
university. The Department Head is a key participant in a range of
initiatives including: outreach to students and faculty to support the
identification, evaluation, and synthesis of/contribution to knowledge
resources in all formats; development and user instruction on the new
Voyager library information system (installed January *97); and
participation in space planning to make the library architecturally
responsive to evolving models of learning and teaching. The Head
participates in the department*s consultation and instructional services as
well as in a selected humanities or social sciences collection development
responsibility. The Department Head is a direct report to the Assistant
Dean, Public Services, and works in close collaboration with other public
services administrators, with the Head, Collection Development, and with
project-based teams drawn from all library departments.
Qualifications:
--An understanding of the mission of a teaching and research university and
an ability to convey the integral role of the library in this setting
--Experience in teaching the identification, evaluation, interpretation, and
use of knowledge resources
--Administrative and supervisory experience, with evidence of strengths
--Experience with online integrated library systems, campus networks,
electronic information resources and the Internet
--Experience in academic collection development, for print and electronic
resources
--Ability to assess service needs
--Ability to facilitate group decision-making and planning processes
--Ability to foster staff growth and development
--Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal
skills
--MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution
--Five years* increasingly responsible academic reference experience
--Record of professional activities
Salary dependent upon qualifications -- minimum $45,000 plus benefits:
