Search Extended: Science/Engineering Reference Librarian
Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Twelve-month, tenure-track faculty
position with anticipated starting date of August 1, 1997.
Responsibilities: science reference desk coverage with occasional night/
weekend hours, patron assistance with print and electronic resources,
BI, database searching, and basic management of departmental computer
workstations.
Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS, bachelor's degree or equivalent
work in science or engineering, strong communication, organizational, and
interpersonal skills, and working knowledge of electronic resources.
Preferred Qualifications: science reference experience, DIALOG searching,
Internet skills, and teaching experience. Salary: $28,000 minimum.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES: CURATOR OF THE MEHRA COLLECTION
Responsibilities: Works under general direction of the Head of Special
Collections and Archives. Responsible for maintaining the daily operation of
the newly-acquired Jagdish Mehra Collection. Administers, develops,
organizes and provides access to various facets of the collection, which
include over 15,000 monographs, plus a large collection of manuscripts,
correspondence and photographs, as well as extensive tape recordings and
transcripts. Works closely with the donor to establish historical context
of the collection. Develops public outreach programs. Oversees the
development of computerized finding aids through the Internet as well as
full automation of the collections' records in the Innopac integrated
library system. Coordinates the identification and preparation of external
funding sources, the continued development of the collection, and reference
services to scholars using the collection. Supervises 2 staff as well as
student assistants.
Requirements: Requires an ALA accredited Master's degree. Must show
evidence of progressively responsible experience in special collections or
archives setting, with processing experience required. Knowledge of
computerized applications as they relate to library functions.
Demonstrated knowledge in at least one of the following: physics,
astrophysics, cosmology, mathematics, or history of science. Excellent oral
and written communication skills. Must show a commitment to participatory
management and user-oriented service. Preference will be given to
applicants with significant public service and special collections/archives
experience, program management and supervisory experience, and familiarity
with microcomputers and emerging technologies for networked access. Ability
and willingness to lift heavy (30-50 lbs.) containers.
Salary: $31,000. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available;
release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.
Jagdish Mehra Collection: The collection includes major 17th-20th century
monograph titles in physics, mathematics, philosophy of science, history of
civilization, world history, philosophy and literature, published in
English, French and German; numerous manuscripts of published as well as
unpublished books, papers and lectures of many distinguished physicists,
mathematicians, philosophers and literati; extensive tapes and transcripts
of interviews and conversations with major physicists, astrophysicists and
cosmologists who have been pioneers in creating and contributing to the
fields of the old quantum theory, quantum mechanics, and post-Einsteinian
developments in general relativity and unified field theories, astrophysics
and cosmology; and tape recorded conversations with many notable literary
figures, philosophers and historians.
The collection is housed in an off-campus facility for the near future.
Library Information: The Libraries are a member of the Association of
Research Libraries, hold over 1.8 million volumes, with a current materials
budget of $4.2 million. Total staff includes 46 professionals and 170
