Mann Library provides innovative services and is an ideal place to
participate in digital library evolution. Its principal client
population of 10,000 uses a collection of almost one million
agricultural, life, and social science publications. Three positions
available, one each in tech services, information technology, and
public services:
1. Cataloging Manager
Manage innovation, workflow, and services of the Cataloging Unit,
including supervision of copy catalogers (4 FTE). Facilitate access to
print and digital collections through original cataloging and
developing retrieval systems for full-text, spatial, and numeric files.
Participate in research and development efforts and in cataloging and
metadata discussions.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent. Evidence of
management potential. Facility with personal computers, information
retrieval software, and network navigation tools. Working knowledge of
one or more foreign languages. Desirable: Two years of cataloging
experience; knowledge of cataloging, full-text retrieval, and metadata
standards.

2. Information Technology Professional
Help develop and maintain the digital library, including programming,
system management, and participation on interdivisional task forces.
Areas of work: electronic full text; data visualization; Z39.50
implementation; use of advanced Web applications. Participate in
instruction program and user studies.
Qualifications: Programming experience with Windows NT, Unix, C, Perl,
Tcl/Tk, and/or Java; degree in computer or information science or 3-5
years equivalent experience.

3. Public Services Librarian
Member of reference, consulting, and instruction team of 8
professionals. Develop expertise in technologies for information
delivery; lead and/or participate in research. Special responsibility:
Create a virtual Reference Room. Integrate and maintain the print and
electronic reference collection.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent. Required: strong
interpersonal and presentation skills; commitment to service;
experience with information technologies. Two to three years of
experience in a library or similar setting desirable.

Automation Unit in the Information Resources and Communications
Department. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are located in

PROGRAMMER/ANALYST III $44,300 - 66,400
Essential functions: As a member of the Library Automation unit, provide
workstation-based support for user interfaces for the University of
California MELVYL Library system through programming, design, and
analysis. Develop complex UNIX-based application and protocol software
for the MELVYL system. Modify and maintain developed software in
response to input from campus and end users. Enhance pre-existing
software packages to provide new functionality. With senior staff will
participate in specification and design of the technical environment and
system for workstation-based applications, including end user interfaces
for the MELVYL system (such as WEB server applications) and system
packages. Provide unit staff with technical support and training on
issues concerning UNIX, C programming language, etc. Provide analytical
support for defining requirements and establishing the technical
environment for developing UNIX applications for the MELVYL system.
Analyze available UNIX tools and components and make recommendations as
to how to best integrate them into the evolving system.
Skills, knowledge and abilities: Significant related experience including
C programming and UNIX operating system. Logical reasoning skills.
Problem recognition and solving skills. Excellent oral and communications
skills. Prefer experience with Web based applications, C++, perl, Java,
Z39.50 protocol, X-Windows system, and Adobe Acrobat PDF and other file
formats.

PROGRAMMER/ANALYST I $32,136 - 38,652
Essential functions: Design, write and maintain software to process
bibliographic records received by Library Automation from the University
of California campuses' local library systems, OCLC, RLIN and other
vendors. Develop and maintain documentation, benchmark files and JCL.
Perform in-house software implementation. Review production runs and
suggest software modifications when warranted. Coordinate return of
error records.
Skills, knowledge and abilities: Education and experience equivalent to
a college graduation and the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to
successful performance of the duties assigned. Knowledge of USMARC
Format for Bibliographic Data, knowledge of PL/I or other high-level
text-handling programming language, ability to perform analysis, and
strong written and oral communication skills. MLS or relevant library
experience preferred. Knowledge of WYLBUR and IBM JCL desirable.
