POSITION:           HEAD, CATALOGING DEPARTMENT

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The University at Albany is seeking a librarian to manage the
operations of a highly automated Cataloging Department which includes
original cataloging, copy cataloging, and catalog maintenance.  The
University at Albany uses RLIN and OCLC, and performs local cataloging on
Geac's ADVANCE system.  The successful candidate will provide leadership in
training and staff development for 14 FTE positions including 4.5
librarians, 4.6 paraprofessionals, and 5 classified service staff.  Working
cooperatively with the Department's librarians and others as appropriate,
sets goals, establishes priorities and work flow, and leads the ongoing
review of departmental policies and procedures.  Encourages and recognizes
excellence.  Fosters effective communication and teamwork within the
department.  Leads the Department in the evaluation and efficient,
innovative use of new technologies in a changing environment.

Criteria for continuing appointment and promotion include research,
publication, and service to the Libraries, University and profession.
Reports to the Assistant Director for Technical Services and Systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent.
Substantial cataloging experience in a medium size or large academic or
research library, to include direct knowledge of and experience with MARC
formats, AACR2, the application and interpretation of LC subject headings
and classification.  Knowledge of national cataloging standards and issues,
and trends in technical services and automation.  Demonstrated managerial,
planning, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.  Direct
knowledge of and experience with at least one of the national bibliographic
utilities and a local automated system.  Demonstrated ability to take an
active role in planning and implementing system upgrades, maximizing system
efficiency.

Desired:  Reading knowledge of at least one western European language or
Chinese or Japanese.

SALARY:
Commensurate with education and experience.  Minimum $40,000.00.

TERMS & BENEFITS:
Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual leave @ 1.25 days
each per month; health insurance, major medical or Health Maintenance
Organization and dental.  Social Security coverage.  TIAA/CREF or New York
State Teachers Retirement available (employee contribution rate = 3%).

College Librarian for Business.  The College Librarian, a library faculty
position offers faculty and students in the Pamplin College of Business

on-site, intradepartmental, discipline-related consulting to expand their
awareness and use of information and technological resources, both internal
and external to the University.  This is a mid-career faculty position and
reports to the Head of User Services.

The College Librarian will work with the departments in the College to
advance the use of computing and information resources in research and
teaching. Responsibilities include assisting faculty with the use of the
World Wide Web technology, collection development, library  instruction, and
providing reference service at the main library.

Qualifications:   MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.  Experience in
providing reference liaison work or academic consulting; knowledge of the
information needs of scholars and students in business fields primarily in
the areas of accounting, finance, economics, marketing, and management
science.  Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and implement effective
programs and services. The College Librarian must have technical
competencies and experience in the use of networked information resources,
be resourceful, demonstrate  effective instructional and communication
skills, and have a strong service ethic.  Preferred: Baccalaureate or
advanced degree in a business discipline.

Salary:  Twelve-month faculty appointment; rank and anticipated salary in
mid to upper $30,000's commensurate with experience and credentials.

Acquisitions Librarian.  The University Libraries at Virginia Tech announces
a search for an Acquisitions Librarian, a library faculty position in the
Technical Services Department.  This position oversees acquisitions of all
library materials, with primary responsibilities for developing
Requests-For- Proposal and other vendor negotiations; monitors contracts and
vendor performance, including approval and blanket orders.  Responsible for

                        Technical Service Librarian

San Jacinto College seeks applications for the position of technical
service librarian.  Reporting to the Director, the position manages
technical services consisting of 2 professionals and 2.5 support
positions.  The Library uses DYNIX integrated system, OCLC, and a
wide-area network accessing a CD/ROM database.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Managing another professional and 2.5 support staff the position is
responsible for cataloging and integrating catalog records into the
library's OPAC.  It supervises book preparation and binding for three
campuses and planning and training staff.  It is responsible for both
maintaining and planning for the development of wide-area network
services.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
ALA accredited Master of Library Science degree and training in Novell
networks.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of three years experience in cataloging and other technical
service operations.  Knowledge of MARC, AACR2, LC subject cataloging and
automated name and authority control systems.  Experience with one of
the national bibliographical utilities and a local automation system.
Ability to provide leadership in networked computer environment.
Experience and or training in Novell 3.X networks.  Ability to work with
