VACANCY NOTICE
POSITION: HEAD, REFERENCE SERVICES DEPARTMENT
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University at Albany is seeking a librarian to
provide leadership in the planning, development and provision of
innovative, pro-active reference and research services in a rapidly
changing information environment. The Department includes active,
highly visible print and electronic reference services, user education,
and government publications units. Emphasis for this position is on
effective leadership to provide responsive user-centered service. The
successful candidate will coordinate the provision of reference and
research services by supervising a departmental staff of 8 FTE library
faculty, and coordinating the reference activities of an additional
7.5 FTE library faculty who serve primarily as bibliographers.
Participation in the user education program, and evening and weekend
reference service hours will be expected. Reports to the Assistant
Director for User Services. Research, publication, and service to the
Libraries, University and profession are expected to satisfy criteria
for continuing appointment and promotion.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS degree from an ALA accredited library
and information science program. Five years increasingly responsible
academic reference experience. An understanding of the mission of a
research institution and the role of informational and instructional
technology in this setting. Experience in public-oriented reference
or information access service and user education. Evidence of significant
experience with online integrated library systems, campus networks, the
Internet, and electronic information resources. Demonstrated strength in
administrative, supervisory and leadership skills. Ability to work and
lead in a dynamic, changing information environment. Excellent oral and
written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work
within a diverse academic community. Desired: Advanced degree in a
relevant field. Knowledge of emerging technologies and their applications
in a library setting. Management experience in an academic library.
SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience. Minimum $40,000.00.
TERMS & BENEFITS: Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual leave
@ 1.25 days each per month; health insurance, major medical or Health
Maintenance Organization and dental. Social Security coverage. TIAA/CREF
or New York State Teachers Retirement available (employee contribution
rate = 3%).

ACADEMIC COMPUTER CENTER

The Professional Assistant (12-month) oversees the operation of the
campus academic computing labs as well as student and faculty services.
The Professional Assistant is an expert with Windows, Macintosh and
UNIX software, hardware and network operating systems. The Professional
Assistant reports to the campus head librarian. Specific duties and
responsibilities include the following:
1. Assist faculty with integrating computer technology into the curricula
and schedule the use of the computer classrooms. Assist students and
faculty with computer troubleshooting.
2. Maintain local and wide area networks.
3. Troubleshoot and coordinate hardware repair with the Office of
Information Technology and vendors.
4. Troubleshoot campus mainframe peripherals.
5. Assist with short-term and long-range computer and network planning for
the academic computer center and campus.
6. Initiate budget requests for the academic computer center. Recommend
the purchase of computer hardware, software and supplies.
7. Supervise the scheduling and training of academic computer center
personnel.
8. Perform special assignments and projects as directed by the head
librarian.
Qualifying experience: Masters Degree or 150 credits in CIS or equivalent
discipline or equivalent discipline noncollegiate education/training.
Four years related experience in applications and hardware. A working
knowledge of Ethernet protocols, Novell and Windows NT, and network
management and administration. Demonstrated ability to work independently
within a set of guidelines. Ability to work collaboratively with end
users and provide quality service in a timely and collegial manner.
Salary Minimum: Professional Assistant III $ 44,962
Professional Assistant II $ 38,433

highly-qualified manager with substantial technical services and
automation experience and expertise to re-structure and manage technical
services department. Also responsible for all aspects of the selection,

REQUIREMENTS: M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school. At least 5

Comprehensive knowledge of technical services operations and national
standards. Thorough understanding of and up-to-date experience with
USMARC formats, OCLC, Dewey, LCSH, and a comprehensive, integrated
automated library system such as Dynix, DRA, Innovative Interfaces,
etc.
ALSO SEEKING: Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability and
willingness to develop and maintain a work environment which maximizes
productivity, operational efficiency, and results in the timely and
cost-effective cataloging and processing of all library materials.
Customer-centered approach to library service. Willingness to keep
current via the professional literature, active participation in
professional associations, state and regional planning and initiatives,
and continuing education.
Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications plus
