The SouthEast Michigan League of Libraries (SEMLOL) has a committee that is
beginning a cooperative project to build subject resource guides. One of
the elements we are pursuing is the inclusion of standard library
classification in the HTML meta information. Our resource on Geology, for
example, has the following insertion in the <head> area:

  <META="lc" content="QE 1-996.5">
  <META="lcsh" content="Geology,Mineralogy,Petrology,Dynamic
Geology,Structural Geology,Volcanoes,Paleontology,Astrophysics,Geophysics">

The classification system could be multiple or diverse. Our libraries tend
to use LC and that is what we chose. It would be fine to have META="dcc"
or any other, which could be combined on one page or used exclusively, as
the local institutional catalogers prefer. Our assumption is that if
sufficient institutions begin classifying resources in this manner, the
search engines will start to have a search option for this. This would be
particularly useful with a search engine with limited scope -- restricted
to institutions who use this system.

We also use the LC number by the LCSH subheadings in the HTML documents.
This seems to us to be a corollary to including URLs in the OPAC.
