AMIGOS FALL CONFERENCE - THE PATHWAY TO ADVOCACY
DALLAS, TEXAS, October 3, 1996 -- AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, Inc.
announced today that the AMIGOS 1996 Fall Conference will be held in
Dallas, Texas, November 6-7, 1996. Power and Influence: Tactics for
Success, a full-day workshop, cosponsored by Library Administration and
Management Association, on Wednesday, November 6, will show those who
seek it how to acquire success. Dr. Abigail Hubbard, consultant to
managers and a lecturer in the Department of Management for the College
of Business Administration at the University of Houston will outline the
technique for influencing others, a skill that allows you to achieve
your goals. In this workshop, participants will learn how to achieve
personal and organizational objectives in the face of competition.
Analysis of influence tactics and personal assessments will provide
participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in
acquiring the resources needed for the survival of their organizations.
Scarce resources and turbulent times require librarians to engage in the
game of politics with the same vigor as their competitors. The cost for
the session is $160 for AMIGOS and LAMA Members, $210 for nonmembers,
and $50 for full-time library science students. Imaging Images: Making
Photographs Part of the Digital Library is a half-day workshop on
Wednesday. Steve Smith, AMIGOS Imaging Team, will present an overview of
imaging terminology and technology and discuss the nature of
photographic materials as well as the challenges they present. Tim
Blevins, Photograph Conservation Technician, New Mexico State
University, will describe his approach to imaging photographs and
discuss several imaging projects which he has been involved in. Allan
Bell, Systems Librarian, and Jerry Stafford, Curator of Photographs and
Graphics, Special Collections Division, will describe The University of
Texas at Arlington Libraries' imaging efforts and share their
experiences with equipment and technical issues, the selection of
materials for imaging, networking images, and the problematic issue of
indexing the images. Paul Schwabe, Excalibur Technologies, will
demonstrate pattern recognition software. The cost for the session is
$65 for AMIGOS Members, $90 for nonmembers, and $50 for full-time
library science students.
Just two days after Election 96, the AMIGOS General Session will
highlight the issues in Washington as well as Austin, Little Rock,
Oklahoma City, Phoenix, and Santa Fe, that will be of concern to
libraries in the upcoming federal and state legislative terms. Federal
and State Information Policy and Funding Issues: Politics, Elections,
and Libraries the General Session on Thursday, November 7, brings
together a leading library advocate and a state librarian to focus on
library technology and funding issues at the state and national level
and examine the interrelationships of the jurisdictions. Carol C.
Henderson, Executive Director, ALA Washington Office, will provide an
update and overview of federal library legislation emphasizing universal
service (discounted telecommunications rates for libraries), the Library
Services and
Technology Act (LSTA), and digital copyright. Nancy Bolt, Colorado State
Librarian, will present a national overview of state level policy,
funding, and technology infrastructure issues. Tom Clareson, AMIGOS,
will report on interviews with the state librarians in the AMIGOS
region. Karen Watkins, New Mexico State Librarian, will facilitate the
session. The cost for the session is $100 for AMIGOS Members, $125 for
nonmembers, and $50 for full-time library science students.
