General Summary:
Reporting to Coordinator of Information Systems, is primarily
responsible for developing an Internet training curriculum and training
Detroit Associated Libraries staff to use the Internet's resources in
the new IS Department and LSCA funded Internet training center at Main
Library. Long-range plans include offering training to library staff
from multi-type libraries in the Detroit Associated Libraries Region of
Cooperation and to the public. As a member of the IS staff, the
Specialist will perform help desk duties and will also participate in
testing new information products, software and work station
configurations, compiling feedback from other staff and library computer
users.
Typical Duties:
Plan for, develop and convert existing Internet training materials
available from other Michigan Internet Training Centers into local
course materials following state standards and guidelines for core
curriculum; present formal classroom instruction on the use of Internet
resources including Internet software and other application programs
available on the Training Center workstations such as word processing,
desktop publishing, communications, and spreadsheets; participate on
statewide Internet planning task force and attend conferences for skills
update; travel in own vehicle to area libraries.
Required Qualifications:
ALA accredited MLS; at least one year successful, training experience;
Internet experience; ability to quickly adapt to and learn new software
without extensive training; good verbal, written communication skills;
commitment to providing service to a diverse computer user population;
ability to work with staff members and the public in a friendly,
cooperative manner; flexibility and willingness to embrace change;
physical and mental capacity to perform all aspects of job.
Desired Qualifications:
Training and practical experience on other computer applications such as
word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing; experience with World
Wide Web development; technical service experience such as with OCLC, or
other cataloging tools; experience with use of computers to access
library collections especially with NOTIS, both in staff and public
modes.

Public Services Librarian
The Bologna Center of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International
Studies of the Johns Hopkins University seeks a Public Services
Librarian.
Staff Level: Senior Staff position
Start Date: January 1997
Institutional Environment: The Bologna Center of the Paul H. Nitze
School of Advanced International Studies, located in Bologna, Italy, is
the only full-time graduate school of international relations in Europe
and offers an inter-disciplinary program of studies in international
economics, politics and contemporary history.
The Center has a library of over 75,000 volumes and 1,000 periodicals
and serials.
The library has a full-time staff of five.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head Librarian, supervises all public
service areas, including circulation/reserve desk, provides reference
service and manages inter-library loans. Is responsible for the setting
up of the library reserve collection each semester. Trains staff and
users in the use of library automation/Internet resources. Explores and
promotes the use of new information technologies. Supervises 1 FTE and
10 student assistants.
Required Qualifications: MLS or equivalent. 2 years of professional
experience in an academic library. Strong inter-personal skills and
ability to work effectively, both independently and with colleagues and
users in a rapidly changing, multi-cultural environment. Knowledge of
Internet/online database searching essential. Must be flexible,
detail-oriented and skilled at setting priorities and working to
deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual English/Italian desired.

The University of Michigan

The new School of Information at The University of Michigan is growing
rapidly and anticipates making a number of faculty appointments over the
next several years beginning in 1997. The School was chartered in March
of 1996 as a major initiative of the University to develop and apply an
integrated understanding of human needs and their relationships to
information systems and social structures. The School=D5s mission is to
generate new knowledge, deliver quality professional education, educate
new scholars, and build partnerships to solve fundamental problems.
The School currently has almost 30 faculty, and they have advanced
degrees in many disciplines, including library science, history, information
science, computer science, engineering, psychology, economics, education,=
political science, and public policy. The faculty are engaged in numerous
sponsored research projects, including the areas of digital libraries,
collaborative work environments, information retrieval, information access,
and electronic commerce. The faculty supervise approximately 25 Ph.D.
students, many of whom are involved in the School=D5s sponsored research
projects. There are currently 250 students studying for their Master of
Science in Information (MSI) degrees in such areas as library and
information services, archives and records management, human-computer
interaction, future systems architectures, and organizational information
systems.
The School has embarked on a multi-year plan to expand its academic and
research programs, including corresponding increases in the size of the
faculty and student body. This expansion is being facilitated by
innovative use of information technology to support all of its programs,
including technologies that relax the constraints of time and distance. In
alliance with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation the School is developing
ambitious global educational and service activities that will be key
elements of the School=D5s instructional programs. Detailed information

Most of these appointments will be made at the Assistant Professor level,

multi-person appointments. We may also be able to make joint
appointments with other Schools and Colleges at the University where
appropriate. Candidates for these positions would ordinarily have a Ph.D.
in a relevant field, and must possess a commitment to working in an
interdisciplinary environment.
