For reasons which I don't have the time to discuss, I assisted a client a
number of years ago in identifying barcodes of various sorts to meet
their needs. One interesting possibility that we identified was a barcode
that was a solid black mark with the barcode encoded using infrared ink.
This turned out to be a rather easy solution, although the customer, in
the end, chose otherwise. However, it may be a great answer here, since
the light pens do not require much modification and the ink is fairly
available. Of course, magnetic ink would also be possible with a black
mark hiding the detail.
