Seeking an enthusiastic individual to manage a comprehensive program of
promoting and maintaining good public relations for the County of Los
Angeles Public Library.  Must have excellent listening and verbal/written
communication skills; proven ability to work effectively
within the political
arena; tact, diplomacy and flexibility in interpersonal relations; high
ethical standards and good judgement; excellent project management and
presentation skills.

SELECTION  REQUIREMENTS:  Graduation from an accredited college - AND -
4 years public relations experience in a major public sector organizatio=
n that
serves a population of 45,000 or more required.  Experience must include =
the writing and placing of news and feature articles for the various
communication media.   Experience working in or with a public library
system providing public information services desirable.

LICENSE:  A California Class "C" Driver's License may be required.

REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:   Applicants who are invited to participate in
interview portion of this examination will be asked to provide samples
of their work, including copies of news releases and feature articles.

FILING INSTRUCTIONS:  Applications must be received no later than the
close of business on Monday, September 23, 1996.   The acceptance of your

County of Los Angeles application, and you have clearly shown that you

Serials Coordinator:  The University Libraries at Virginia Tech are seeking
to fill the position of Serials Coordinator in the Technical Services
Department.  The Serials Coordinator will direct and manage all of the
functions of the Continuations Management Team which include the receipt,
copy cataloging, bibliographic maintenance, and binding of serials in an
automated environment.  Responsible for planning, setting goals and
priorities, formulating policies, designing and monitoring workflow,
allocating staff, and providing leadership for the continuing development
of serials automation.  The successful candidate will be familiar with
current trends in serials management and control, including computer
applications and national standards for bibliographic controls; have
demonstrated experience with OCLC and a local library cataloging system; be
able to provide strong leadership; and possess effective communication,
interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.  Reports to the Head of
Technical Services.

The Continuations Management Team consists of twelve staff and has a large
student wage budget.  The team's responsibilities include check-in,
claiming, and binding of 18,000 continuing titles, and copy cataloging of
new and changed titles; and the receiving and cataloging of government
depository items.  The VTLS library system is used for serials check-in,
and the library uses the USMARC standard for coded holdings.

Qualifications:  Master's degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA
accredited program required.  The successful candidate should possess a
knowledge of current and national cataloging trends in an automated
environment; knowledge of current trends and issues in serials control;
demonstrated experience working with a bibliographical utility and an
integrated cataloging system, experience with computer applications such as
spread sheets and database management.  The Serials Coordinator should have
supervisory and training experience.  Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills.  Preferred:  Academic library experience;
participation in professional activities at the national and local level;
demonstrated problem solving skills, especially with workflow analysis of
technical services functions.  SALARY: Twelve-month faculty appointment;
rank and salary dependent upon credentials with a minimum salary of
$28,000.

The Central Washington University Library seeks three librarians to
help us provide high quality service in an academic environment
increasingly reliant on electronic tools and networked information
resources. There are opportunities to promote user education in a
state-of-the-art electronic classroom, provide full-text delivery
to users in multiple service locations across the state, and develop
methods to share resources with other institutions.  We seek librarians

Electronic Resources Librarian and Assistant Head of Reference

Reports to Head of Reference. Serves as a generalist with focus on

reference service.  Acts as a reference liaison with the library's
Systems Department.  Offers class instruction to library users. May
rotate to other departments, such as Documents, in order to expand

of the department head.  Works some evenings and weekends. The
Reference team includes seven librarians, two subject specialists, and
a library technician.

Qualifications
Minimum: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent; strong public service
orientation; demonstrated leadership, organizational, communication,
and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a team setting
with students, staff, and faculty colleagues.  Generalist with focus on
library electronic resources.  Five years professional reference
experience in a university library, including both traditional and
electronic reference resources. Experience in searching CD-ROM, Internet,
and other online information resources.

Desirable: Experience in designing and evaluating Internet-based
reference tools. Creation of multimedia user instructional programs.
Master Degree in computer science or in the natural sciences. Experience
in library instruction. Leadership or supervisory library experience.
Publication in refereed journals and participation in professional
organizations.


Reference Librarian

such as Government Documents, Maps, and Microforms in order to expand
expertise in these areas.

Qualifications
Minimum:
Lecturer (non-tenure track): ALA Accredited MLS or equivalent; strong
public service orientation; demonstrated organizational, communication,
and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively in a team setting
with students, staff and faculty colleagues. Assistant Professor (tenure
track) additional requirements: five years professional
university/college library experience or equivalent experience at other
large library; an additional advanced degree or systematic course work
may substitute for up to three years experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with university/college library
experience.

Desirable: In order to round out our collective subject expertise,
preference will be given to candidates with course work or a degree in
the sciences. Experience with Innopac or other integrated library
system. Experience and/or education in database and Internet searching
and user instruction. Participation in professional organizations.

Documents Librarian

library users with CD-ROM and Internet searching; supervise classified
staff and student employees; work some evenings and weekends; may rotate
to other departments, such as Reference, in order to expand expertise in
these areas. The Documents, Maps, and Microforms Department includes two
librarians and three library technicians.
