An incident this morning has clearly demonstrated the power of older
technologies and how they are not yet obsolete.
This morning on my way to work I was tailgated for over 5 miles by a man
in military uniform driving a vehicle from the federal Interagency Motor
Pool. This group is administered by the Government Services
Administration. He was less than 5 feet from my bumper at speeds
ranging from 45 mph to 55 mph on a road known locally as very dangerous
at speeds above the speed limit of 55 mph. I wrote down the plate
number and description of the vehicle. I wanted to report him to the
appropriate agency.
I tried without much luck to locate a phone number in local directories
for the GSA. I then went to U.S. Government Manual and found the main
number for GSA in Washington, DC. They then gave me the number for
fleet operations (202-755-0292). I reported the incident. They will be
contacting the appropriate persons to look into the incident.
I drew a couple of "morals" from this incident. The telephone is still
the one of the most powerful communication and information tools we have
in our arsenal of tools. The human contact and one to one voice
communications is still the most effective means of transmitting
information in many circumstances.
The second one is if you are going to tailgate using a government
vehicle, don't get behind a librarian!!
