For Immediate Release ...
WLN to Provide Spanish Language Cataloging Services
for Libros Sin Fronteras
WLN, a premier bibliographic utility, has agreed to provide
cataloging services to Libros Sin Fronteras (LSF), a major
distributor of Spanish language materials. The service is
scheduled to begin September 1, 1996.
Providing Records for LSF-distributed Titles
WLN will provide bibliographic records for Spanish language
materials for Libros Sin Fronteras. The agreement includes
records that already exist in the WLN Bibliographic Database
as well as original cataloging of full level USMARC
bibliographic records for LSF-distributed titles which were
not in the WLN database. Because of the strict adherence to
USMARC standards, all records will be 100% compatible with
any local catalog system.
The WLN Cataloging Service provides quality cataloging in all
formats and many languages in accordance with the Anglo
American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition revised, the latest
Library of Congress rule interpretations, and Library of
Congress name and subject heading practices. The WLN
Cataloging Service creates minimal to full level cataloging
for all formats in most Roman and non-Roman languages and
provides LC and/or Dewey classification.
Distributing Records to LSF Customers
When LSF receives a book order that includes a request for
USMARC records, WLN will provide a bibliographic record for
each title ordered. All newly created records will undergo
the same quality control measures established for
participating WLN online libraries. The USMARC records will
then be downloaded to a diskette for inclusion in the book
shipment or will be sent directly to the customer via the
Internet.
At the library's request, a Dewey or LC call number as well
as other USMARC fields such as local subject headings can be
included in the record. Cards and labels, printed to
customer specifications, are also available.
Benefitting Libraries
This new partnership between WLN and Libros Sin Fronteras
will benefit the library community. Libraries will save
time and money. Instead of doing original cataloging
themselves or looking for records elsewhere, they will
receive the highest quality USMARC records, and they will
have these records immediately available for inclusion in
their catalog.
Who is WLN?
WLN (Western Library Network) provides bibliographic, computer, and
Internet services to hundreds of libraries throughout North America.
Libraries connect to the WLN Online Database, a catalog of more than
13 million records, via the Internet or by dialup. Hundreds of
other libraries subscribe to LaserCat, a 4-million record CD-ROM
catalog updated quarterly and the new FastCat, a single disc CD-ROM
catalog that provides 1 million records selected especially for K-12
schools. WLN's Collection Assessment Service and software is highly
regarded in the library community and used by scores of larger
libraries and consortia from coast to coast and internationally.
WLN's bibliographic services maintain the world's highest standards
in original cataloging, authority control, and quality assurance.
Libros Sin Fronteras
Libros Sin Fronteras is a major North American distributor
or Spanish-language publishing houses throughout Mexico,
Central & South America and the Caribbean. LSF surveys the
entire spectrum of Latin American publications, evaluates the
relevance of each title from a North American perspective,
not only for content, but for physical quality and price, and
includes the very best of these titles in their catalog. The
Libros Sin Fronteras catalog is updated frequently to include
the most recent offerings as well as hard-to-find older
materials. Entries are fully annotated to assist the collection
development librarian in obtaining exactly the right mix for his
or her collection. The selection includes books, spoken word
cassettes, videos, and Latin Americand music.
