I was wondering what, if any, experience other libraries have had with =
use of CD-ROM drives at patron and/or administrative machines in a =
networked environment. =20
I am interested in issues such as:=20
1. Network security (is there an approach to allowing for CD-ROM use =
without compromising network security and workstation configuration. =
For example, from an Info Tech perspective, workstations are configured =
and networked in a standardized way, and therefore =
supported/troubleshooted consistently. To allow CD installations could =
jeopardize the functioning of standard IT-installed software. Also, =
viruses are another consideration - as there is not currently a =
virus-checking utility for CD-ROM drives.
2. Patron use policies/guidelines and physical security. =20
Moreover, have you found that CD-ROM drives are a necessary component in =
patron/administrative workstation configuration? If so, why. Also, =
what other schemas have you found appropriate or functional for =
providing CD-ROM support (CD-ROM computer lab, CD's housed and "signed =
out" at Reference)?
