I don't know about the CDs, but the jewel boxes are certainly useful as
replacements for broken ones, of which there are always several.

Some CDs are required by the vendor to be destroyed after they become
superseded.
Others vendors let you use them on other machines.
Many CDs are no good without the proprietry UI that may come with them.
Really old CD`s make great:
frisbees
drink coasters
kitschy wall clocks
earrings
heliographs
Put a CDROM in your CD stereo and play it loadly when you want to
drive your {neighbours, SO, dog, cat} to insanity.
Truth is, it depends on your vendor.
The rest is up to you...

Regarding CD's that are no longer used, we punch a hole in them with a
standard, electric office hole-puncher and use them in December hanging them
from 'ye old library Christmas tree in the lobby. If you gather a bunch of
them during they year, they can make a very colorful arrangement. Of course,
this is if your library feels it can do a Christmas tree, about which there
can be controversy.

In our department, we have some disks which we are contractually obligated
to destroy. Others, not. In both cases, when disks outlive their
usefulness the FSU community I either give them to a staff member, who
uses them for art projects, or I take them home and make Christmas
ornaments out of them.
