SCIENCE REFERENCE LIBRARIAN/BIOMEDICAL SPECIALIST
The University of Chicago Library/John Crerar
Library seeks applicants for the position of
Science Reference Librarian/Biomedical Specialist.
The John Crerar Library contains over 900,000
volumes in science, medicine, and technology. A
staff of six reference librarians and
bibliographers provide reference services and
assist users with electronic, print, and microform
sources; interlibrary loan; and Internet
applications.
Under the supervision of the Head of Reference
Services, this person serves with five reference
librarians/bibliographers to provide scheduled
science reference assistance to all library users
including University faculty, students, and staff;
Crerar corporate members; and the general public
The primary focus of this position is reference
service. Special emphasis placed on service to
the faculty, students, and staff of the Biological
Sciences Division, the Pritzker School of
Medicine, and the University Medical Center.
In addition, the Science Reference Librarian/
Biomedical Specialist provides formal and
informal library orientation and instruction
in the use of print and electronic information
services; manages reference correspondence; and
assists in the development and maintenance of the
science reference collection (print and
electronic); develops and maintains biomedical
and science WWW pages; oversees collection,
analysis, and the dissemination of use statistics
and other analyses as warranted; and supervises
student staff.
Other responsibilities include participation in
local, regional and national professional and
scholarly organizations and service on library-
wide committees and task forces.
Qualifications: Required: Master's degree from
ALA-accredited library school; good basic
knowledge of science reference materials with an
emphasis on biomedical sources; knowledge of
bibliographic and scientific terms; knowledge and
experience with microcomputer and internet
applications including basic HTML. Energy and
human relations skills to handle the pressures of
reference service with accuracy and poise are
required. Ability to communicate effectively and
work well with colleagues and library patrons
individually and in groups is essential. Highly
desirable: one to five years professional
reference experience in an academic science or
medical library; Medline and computer search
experience and familiarity with a variety of
information technologies and their applications to
reference activities as is an awareness of new
technological developments in libraries. Reading
knowledge of a foreign language is required with
knowledge of German, French or Russian preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Appointment salary based on
qualifications and experience. Range begins at
$30,135. Benefits include contributory retirement
plan, health and life insurance, 22 vacation days,
6 University holidays, 5 personal holidays and
sick leave. There is a tuition benefit plan for
college age and younger children.
