Publishers are in the process of changing the formats for traditional
reference sources. At the University of Michigan Business School
Library, we are grappling with the problems which accompany discs and
diskettes from these publishers. Two cases in point:
(1) Value Line has announced that they will no longer send us a print
edition of the Industry Review. Instead, we have begun receiving a
diskette. The problem with this policy, however, is that the monthly
disks are not cumulative, so we have twelve individual disks/issues
which must all be available for our patrons. An installation of an
update will override the previous month.
(2) CRB (Commodity Yearbook Statistical Supplement) is now sending
diskette supplements. The cell contents are not parsed so one row
equals one cell. It is necessary to add breaks in tables in order to
use in spreadsheets. This must be done to each individual table. The
data is not read only and there is a noticeable lack of instructions.
Has anyone faced similar problems with these two titles or with other
sources? Have you been able to circumvent the problems? How?
Thanks in advance for any information that you can provide.
