I've been on lists where this approach was taken and given the half life
of machines and machine names it's a bad idea. The way the _system_
automaticly tells if you are a member is by matching you mail in name to
your subscribe name which is ok except that the sys admin folks who run
systems every once in a while change the names just a bit like at IU. Once
it was ______.ucs.indiana.edu and then it became ____@indiana.edu. Nice
idea until someone does what you are suggesting. SysAdmin folks are very
bad at dealing with this little oddities and generally assume it is the
users fault who had nothing to do with changing the machine name or
changing machines or locking up lists to subs only. And then you have
situations where you/I have multiple accounts and can no longer remember
where we sub-d from in the first place even though our mail is
<dot>forworded thru Katmandu and and read on kuda beach thru an account in
ausie.net. You reply and the system says: I'm sorry but only members are
allowed to reply!

God gave us index fingers, <d> keys, and kill files so we could easily
deal with mis postings. Hey Tom, don't you have the GleeBopper in a kill
file somewhere 8-)
