Had Charles Blair announced PACS-L as far afield as computer games forums,
people on those forums would have been justified in criticizing the post.
(I don't recall it happening that way; I first heard about this list in a
professional library setting, where it was highly appropriate.)

Similarly, I think I'm justified in suggesting that an announcement for a
BBS specializing in Doom, SimCity, et al., does little to enhance the
usefulness of this forum, especially since I hear a broad consensus that
this list needs much greater focus rather than greater diffusion. I have
suggested before that an easy, low-maintenance step the list owner could
take toward greater focus would be to accept posts only from subscribers.
I suggest it again.

"When I was your age, I had to walk 12 miles through the
snow--barefoot!--just to get a 300 baud connection to a PDP-11..." With
such a long memory, I'd have thought you'd still recognize what is and
isn't a flame. I was under the impression it didn't cover mild, polite
dissent.
