UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES: Coordinator of Electronic Services

Responsibilities:  Reports to Head of Information Services; responsible
for public service and administrative functions of the Electronic
Publications Center, a networked facility with over 100 workstations and
70 electronic resources.  Includes planning, project implementation,
problem solving, evaluation, reporting, publicity, staff training, and
liaison with other library departments and vendors.  Manages small online
searching operation.  Includes direct supervision of one staff member, and
responsibility for half-time staff member and ten student assistants.
Provides service at the Reference/Electronic Publications Center desk,
including some weekend and evening hours.  Librarian duties include
collection development (print and electronic), library instruction, and
faculty liaison in life sciences.

Requirements:  Requires an ALA-accredited Master's degree and record of
successful supervisory/management experience.  Must have experience with
wide range of electronic information resources.  Excellent interpersonal,
oral and written communication skills required.  Must show a commitment to
outstanding user-oriented services.

Salary:  $31,000.  Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available;
release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income
tax.

Library Information:  As the research library for a four-campus system,
the University of Houston Libraries holdings exceed 1.8 million volumes,
with a current materials budget of $4.2 million.  Total staff includes 46
professionals and 170 support staff.  The library is a member of ARL.

vital commerce force.  It has established a flourishing cultural life
rivaled by few cities in the world.  It enjoys the amenities of a large

Foreign Literatures & Languages Bibliographer/Instructional Technology
Facilitator - University of Rochester

Serves as the Library's principal subject bibliographer/liaison to
the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) and expands that
traditional role by incorporating a wide array of technology-enhanced
information services.  Provides collection development, subject specialized
electronic access, information assistance and instruction for MLC and for
other foreign language/literature-related concerns.  Works with the
Electronic Resources Librarian and Multimedia Center staff in outreach
to MLC faculty and others in integratinng electronic technology into
teaching, learning, and research; serves as facilitator in the above
with other Reference Department staff.  Serves as Reference Department
Web Coordinator.  Participates in Reference Department's general
information services, including rotating evening and weekend hours.
Reports to the Head, Reference Department, and works in close
collaboration with the Head of Collection Development, the Public
Services Electronic Resources Librarian, and the Head, Multimedia
Center.

QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA-accredited MLS; undergraduate/graduate work in
foreign literatures/languages, preferably Spanish; knowledge of Russian
desirable.  Academic public service experience.  Knowledge of public
service aspects of automated systems, microcomputers, and Internet
access and resources.  Experience in instructional technologies and
the design of Web pages.  Evidence of strong communication, presentation,
and collaboration skills.

environment in its commitment to offer campus-wide information
leadership.  Upgrading to Endeavor's client-server integrated library
information system has begun, with implementation expected in December '96.

I sent the following job ads earlier this week to be posted and now have
minor correction that need to be made.  Please repost the positions as
submitted below which includes the corrections regarding qualifications.


Collegiate Librarian Information Officer (CLIO) (new position).  The
Collegiate Librarian Information Officer (CLIO), a library faculty position
offers faculty and students in the science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry,
Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Psychology) in the
College of Arts and Sciences (for more information see
http://server.lasc.vt.edu) on-site, intradepartmental, discipline-related
consulting to expand their awareness and use of information and
technological resources, both internal and external to the University.

The CLIO will work with the science departments to advance the use of
computing and information resources in research and teaching in the
college.   The CLIO operates  with minimum onsite collections.
Responsibilities  include assisting faculty with the use of the World Wide
Web technology, offering technical support for some general software used
in the College, and collaborating on the development of information
literacy programs within the curriculum.  The CLIO will also promote the
use of information services and technologies in  support of the  College's
cyberschool initiative.

The CLIO will report to the Head of User Services.    The CLIO will
maintain two office locations, one in the College of  Arts and Sciences and
one in the main library.  The CLIO will devote 50 percent of time to
central library services at the main library.  This will entail assisting
the broader university community in the sciences by providing reference,
instructional, and collection development services.

The successful candidate should possess a working knowledge of the sciences
in order to assist faculty with the discipline-specific educational and
research tools available and to disseminate knowledge of these tools within
the College.  The CLIO must have technical competencies and experience in
the use of networked information resources, be resourceful, demonstrate
effective instructional and communication skills, and have a strong client
ethic.

Qualifications:   Baccalaureate degree in the sciences or computing.  MLS
from an ALA-accredited library school.  Experience in providing reference
liaison work or academic consulting; knowledge of the information needs of
scholars and students in science and computer disciplines.  Demonstrated
ability to initiate, plan, and implement effective programs and services.
Excellent interpersonal skills.  Preferred: Advanced degree in the
sciences.  Salary:  Twelve-month faculty appointment; rank and salary
dependent upon credentials and experience with a minimum salary of
$28,000-$32,000.



Technical Services Systems Librarian.  The Technical Services Systems
Librarian reports to the Head of Technical Services and provides support
for the integration of new technologies and new approaches to technical
services operations and provides support for technical services staff use
of information technology and electronic resources.  The position works
closely with Library Automation to coordinate projects and ongoing
automation initiatives to promote, support, and manage technical resources
in order to increase productivity and enhance the working environment of
the Technical Services Department.  Some night and weekend work may be
required.

Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or master's
degree in information systems.  A minimum of two years professional
experience in an academic library setting.  Demonstrated computer skills,
including PCs, networking, World Wide Web technology , and experience
working with a bibliographic utility and integrated cataloging system;
experience in using MARC formats and an understanding of bibliographic
records. Flexibility in  managing a variety of tasks with varying pressures
and changing priorities; collaborating with colleagues/staff throughout the
library system.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred:  Cataloging background or experience in other technical areas
such as acquisition or serials maintenance; participation in professional
activities at the national or local level; demonstrated problem solving
skills, especially workflow analysis of technical processing.
Salary:  Twelve-month faculty appointment; rank and salary dependent upon
credentials and experience with a minimum salary of $28,000-32,000.
