USMARC Fields and Data Elements Part 1 of 2.

The following is a list of USMARC fields applicable for an online catalog
record. The list follows the USMARC order and some missing features
were added at the end of the list. The fields with the square brackets
[ ] were proposed in the MARBI discussion papers. After the number I
gave the original field name. The next lines describe the content of the
field in regard to an online catalog record.

020=International Standard Book Number.
        There is not yet an equivalent of ISBN for computer files or
        Databases.

040=Cataloging Source.

041=Language Code.  (Same as 546)
        For online catalog this field means the language in which the
        online
        catalog operates. Could be more than one language.

042=Authentication Center.

043=Geographic Area Code.
        Code for the place where the online catalog is operating from.
        (e.g for Melvyl Oakland, CA).

045=Time Period of Content.
         Time period of operation of the online catalog.
        ("Time period associated with the item described.")

066=Character Set Present.
        "When ever a set other than ASCII, ANSEL"

110=Main Entry-Corporate name.
        E.g. for GLADIS: University of California, Berkeley California.

[211]=Acronym or Shortened.
        e.g. <MELVYL>, <HOLLIS>.
        Host IP name and numbers: e.g. <melvyl.ucop.edu>

[245]=Title Statement.
        Name of catalog from the welcome screen.
        The "Title Page" for cataloging an online catalog could be
        from:A. Printed document. B. the "Welcome screen". C.
        Centralized (computer) authority list.

[256]= File characteristic. See also 300.
        Size of resource= No. of records.

[260]=Imprint: Place, publisher, date, place of manufacture,
        manufacturer/distributor, date of manufacture/distribution.
        The publisher is the producer of the online catalog. The
        manufacturer/distributor is the one who make the database
        available online. In most cases of online catalogs the first will
        be sufficient.

[265]=Source of Acquisition/Subscription Address.
        Contact name and address (Physical address).
        MARBI uses 535 for both 265 and 270.

[270]=Electronic address. Tel., Telex, Fax , Network address for E-mail
        and Telnet.
        MARBI suggests using also field 535=Location of originals.
        and 541=source of acquisition.
        {this field is not in the blue book}

300=Physical Description: extent= No. of records
        other physical details like No. of Megabytes.

[310] =Current frequency and last date of update.
        I [N.K.] think 315 is better.

315=Frequency.
        How often records are added to the online catalog.

321=Former frequency.
        If different from 315.

340=Textual information concerning the physical characteristic of the
        material."
        We might have online catalog of software where the physical
        characteristics of the material has to be specified.

350=Price. [obsolete]

351=File Structure, Organization and Arrangement, and Sort Sequences
:
        DBMS, and its arrangement.
        System model: e.g. Data Research Associates, DYNIX, GEACK,
        ALEPH, Innovated Interfaces....
        Indexes:  Which fields are indexed?
        Main subfiles (Like the "TEN" and "CAT" in Melvyl that devide
        the collection according to date of publication...).

362=Date of Publication. See also 513.
        Date online catalog started to operate. E.g. statements like:
        "Replaced card catalog for all items received after January
        1977."

500=General Notes.

501=With Note. "More than one bibliographical work".
        Indicate other available databases or online catalogs available
        through this online catalog. MARBI's discussion paper suggest
        the use of 505=Content Note for Other Available Databases.

[505]=content note.
        Available databases.

[506]=Restriction on Access Note.

510=Citation Reference Note. Used to indicate where the item is being
        indexed and abstracted.
        Indicate other electronic forms of indexing e.g. WAIS, WWW
        (World Wide Web).

[513]=Type of Report and Period Covered Note.
        Time span and coverage.
        Explains in more detail the policies of converting the card
        catalog to the online ctalog.

516=Type of file or data note.
        For computer files USMARC specify: computer program, numeric
        file or text file.
        Add "online catalog" as a another kind of file.
