OK, here it is (I have gotten two copies by now, so I can spare one):
Dear Developer,
We appreciate your interest in application development for PIE (Personal
Interactive Electronics) products. As you know, at Boston MacWorld, Apple
announced the Newton MessagePad, the first in a family of products from the PIE
division. As you can imagine, the response has been tremendous. We are
delighted to have developers wanting information on development opportunities
for this product and this is the first in communications to help answer your
questions. In an effort to respond to each of you with as much information as
possible, we have provided you with a list of Questions & Answers for PIE
products and services. Also, at Digital World, Apple announced the Apple Media
Kit, this link will provide information on that product as well.
Apple Media Kit Q & A:
What is the Apple Media Kit?
The Apple Media Kit is a multimedia authoring/digital publishing tool.
Products developed with the Apple Media Kit uses QuickTime to playback on both
computers using Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh computers. The Apple Media
Kit includes two tools, the Apple Media Tool, and the Apple Media Tool
Programming Environment. Both tools are designed to work together for
cross-platform multimedia development.
The Apple Media Tool allows users to assemble media elements and add
interactive features without writing any code. It uses object-based authoring,
for rapid creation of prototypes using rough-draft media elements. It
preserves interactive connections when finished media elements are substituted
for rough-draft media elements. The Apple Media Tool optimizes hard disk-based
and CD-ROM-based projects. The Tool allows you to author on Macintosh and
simultaneously deliver projects on Macintosh and Windows systems.
The Apple Media Tool Programming Environment includes both a new programming
language and a new application framework. It combines the power of an
object-oriented programming language with the ease of use of a scripting
language. The programming environment makes project code portable between
Macintosh and Intel-standard computers running Microsoft Windows. It gives
access to both Macintosh and Microsoft Windows toolboxes through a C language
interface. The Apple Media Tool Programming Environment is currently under
development and planned availablility is scheduled for the end of August. The
price will be $2995.
The Apple Media Tool is currently available from APDA at 1-800-282-2732 (US),
1-800-637-0029 (Canada), 716-871-6555 (International), 716-871-6511 (FAX).
At a special introductory offer of $1495, the Apple Media Tool is bundled free
with version 1.5 of VideoFusion, winner of the MacUser Editor's Choice Award
for the best Macintosh special effects package. List price for VideoFusion is
$749. Buy now to take advantage of this limited time offer. Product support is
available through Apple Customer Service at 1-800-SOS-APPL. The Apple Media Kit
consists of the Media Tool (with free copy of VideoFusion) and the Programming
Environment. The Apple Media Kit is also scheduled for late August. The Apple
Media Kit price will be $3995. The Apple Multimedia Program is currently
available for developers, call 408-974-4897 for an application.
The Apple Media Tool and the Apple Media Tool Programming Environment use
copyrighted Apple software to create cross platform multimedia projects. Apple
charges a royalty for use of this software:
o For commercial publishers:
- 2% of net revenue for each runtime
- 3% of net revenue for hybrid CDs (both Macintosh and Windows runtimes on
the same CD.
o For enterprise customers:
- $5000 per year for unlimited use within an organization. Or...
- $.50 per runtime
o Educational pricing
- To be announced
Newton Q & A:

I want to be a Newton developer. What do I need to develop?
Development can be done by purchasing the Newton ToolKit (NTK), a serial cable
(M0197-available at any Apple dealer location), with a Macintosh 8/30 minimum.
You can purchase NTK beta from APDA at 1-800-282-2732 (US), 1-800-637-0029
(Canada), 716-871-6555 (International), 716-871-6511 (FAX). The cost is $795
for beta, a free upgrade to the final version will be provided to registered
owners as soon as it becomes available.
The Newton Toolkit uses copyrighted Apple software to create Newton
applications and content. Apple will charge a royalty for the use of this
software.
o Commercial developers: royalty of 1% of new revenue.
o Enterprise developers can purchase an internal distribution license for each
Newton Toolkit in their organization. This license allows unlimited internal
distribution of applications and content created by the customer organization.

Technical Support information:
Currently, this product is NOT supported, however, in the coming weeks there
will be a Pioneer Program announced for registered owners. A bulletin board
will be set up for communicating technical information. Once in place, we will
provide specific information on this program to all electronic mail addresses
that we have had previous communications from and NTK registered owners. This
program will be superseded by an announcement at a later date regarding a
complete PIE Developer Program. The announcement of the PIE Developer Program
will address the needs of both corporate and third-party developers. Currently
Apple Partners and Associates will not receive Newton technical support from
the regular Apple Developer Program. The PIE Division is investigating
developer program options and will notify all Apple Partners and Associates via
Apple Directions as soon as the program is announced.
How do I sign up for Newton developer classes?
Classes will be available to all interested Newton developers. Classes will
cost $1800 and you can contact Developer University at 408-974-6215 to register
for classes that will begin in October.
I have a PC, can I do Newton development?
Apple has announced that a PC/Windows development environment will be available
in the future. Currently the availability time has not been announced.
Can I connect my Newton MessagePad to my computer?
The Newton Connection Kit and the Newton Connection Pro Kit enable you to
connect your Newton MessagePad to a PC or an Apple Macintosh to view, edit,
synchronize, and backup information created on the MessagePad. This product is
in beta at this time. If you purchased a Newton at MacWorld, as a show
special, the beta Newton Connection Kit was provided to all who showed a
proof-of-purchase receipt at Symphony Hall. If you received the beta
Connection Kit, you will be upgraded to the final product when it is available.
If you purchased a Newton at MacWorld but did not go to Symphony Hall and
receive the beta Connection Kit, unfortunately, we will not be able to ship
this product to you at this time. You will need to purchase the final version
when it becomes available. The ordering line for the Newton Connection Kit is
1-800-795-1000.
PCMCIA Card information:
The 1 MB Flash Storage Card can store four times the amount of information for
your Newton MessagePad. You can use the 2 MB Flash Storage Card to increase
the storage capacity of the Newton MessagePad communications assistant, and to
back up your information. It will allow you to store eight times as much
information on your Newton MessagePad. Using a card with storage capacity
larger than 4 MB is not recommended. Pricing and purchase information is
available at your local Apple Authorized Dealer.
Will Apple Computer publish my application?
Contact the Starcore Group within the PIE division at Apple Computer for
publishing and distribution of specific applications. Please send in a
proposal on the types of applications that you would like to have considered
for licensing. However, please understand that the number of incoming
proposals may limit our ability to respond to every developer.

Can I beta test Newton?
There isn't a program available for beta testing the Newton MessagePad. Once a
product has been announced, the beta testing program is over for that
particular product.
About this link:
In an effort to respond to the increasing number of incoming links to
NEWTON.DEVS, your link has been automatically forwarded to the Internet gateway
for a response. The system can not identify multiple links from the same
address, so you may receive more than one response. However, all links will
continue to be reviewed and information regarding developers will be added to
our database of interested Newton developers. If you have an Internet account,
you may send messages to our Internet address directly and a response will be
generated without using the Internet gateway.
Newton-What's Next?
The PIE division will continue to work on great products for the future. We
know that you will be as interested in future Newton technology as you are with
the Newton MessagePad. Apple has announced Newton technology, however, we can
not give specific information on future products. If Newton Developer
Relations does not have your contact information (contact name, company name,
address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and AppleLink address)
please provide us with this information. All information is being captured in
our database for future mailings. Thank you for your interest in developing
for PIE products.
