Large Corporations Line Up Behind Newton

CUPERTINO, California--August 2, 1993--Launched today at a press
conference in Boston, the Apple Newton MessagePad has already
achieved notable endorsements from some major institutions and
corporations. Coca-Cola, Monsanto, American Express, ProMED and
others are implementing plans to incorporate Newton technologies into
their information systems strategies.
These corporations and institutions are looking for ways to
streamline processes, operate in a world of shortening product
lifecycles and become more responsive to their customers. They have
seen Newton as a way to quickly and easily manage and communicate
information back and forth between their central information systems
and the point of contact with the customer.
"The combination of strong licensee support for the Newton platform
and strong corporate support for the MessagePad underlines our
efforts to create a standard for the emerging PDA market," said
Gaston Bastiaens, vice president and general manager of Apple's PIE
Division. "Today as we announce the shipment of the first in a family
of Newton products, we are seeing the first step in a broad
acceptance of Newton technology among innovative businesses and
institutions around the world."
American Express is developing applications for its customers who
will use Newton devices. "We are very excited about mobile computing
and its potential applications for our customers--business travelers
in particular," said John I. Williams Jr., senior vice president,
Marketing Information Services, Consumer Card Group, American Express
Travel Related Services Company, Inc. "We are working with Apple to
develop customized applications for the American Express Cardmembers
who will use the Apple Newton."
Ira Tolmich, director, Information Technology, The Coca-Cola
Company, added, "The Coca-Cola Company has been and continues to be very
excited about Apple's technology advancements in the area of
computing for the enterprise. We believe that, with products such as
Newton, Apple has made a major contribution to innovative information
systems which support corporation's business goals."
The Department of Defense is applying the Newton MessagePad to its
health care operations. Final contract negotiations are underway for
a project called ProMED, a joint effort between the Department of
Defense, Apple Computer, and KPMG Peat Marwick. "The health care
environment is a highly dynamic work place. We are very excited about
the promise of message pad computing-especially its capability of
untethered communications," said Col. Fred Goeringer, a project
manager at the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency. "This next-generation
device has enormous potential for streamlining health care productivity.
We foresee great possibilities for improving both patient care and
satisfaction by empowering our health care providers with this
innovative technology."
