Farallon Provides Easiest Network Connectivity
For Apple Newton MessagePad
MessagePad users now have concurrent access to networked Macs and
Printers
ALAMEDA, Calif., August 2, 1993--Farallon Computing, Inc. today
announced support for the Apple Newton MessagePad. Farallon products
that support Newton personal digital assistants (PDAs) will provide
Newton users with an inexpensive and easy way connect to office
networks, print to quality laser printers, and dock with Macintosh
computers over a network. Farallon, the Macintosh networking leader with
over four million users connected, offers a system of reliable
connectivity products to support Macintosh computers, Windows PCs,
printers and now Newton MessagePad PDAs.
Newton MessagePad Connectivity to LocalTalk
The Apple Newton MessagePad features a high-speed serial port capable of
supporting LocalTalk network data rates. The AppleTalk software included
in the Newton provides the basis for communication to both networked
Macintosh computers and laser printers. By attaching a Farallon
PhoneNET(R) Connector or a miniature PhoneNET StarConnector(R) to a
MessagePad PDA's serial port, users can connect directly to a LocalTalk
network. Once networked, users can dock to a Macintosh running Newton
Connection software and print to high-quality laser printers anywhere on
the network. Using Farallon products, MessagePad users can access both
Macintosh computers and printers from one connection, eliminating the
need to physically attach to just one device at a time.
MessagePad Access to Ethernet and Token Ring internetworks
While PhoneNET StarConnector devices provide direct connectivity to
LocalTalk networks, Farallon also offers a family of products to connect
MessagePad PDAs to Ethernet and Token Ring networks. Farallon
PowerPath(tm) software running on a Macintosh computer connected to
LocalTalk will provide a MessagePad user with access to an Ethernet or
Token Ring network. PowerPath operates by using a host Macintosh
computer on an Ethernet or Token Ring network as a pathway to a
LocalTalk device. The solution is the most cost effective way for a
MessagePad user to print and connect to desktop computers over Ethernet
or Token Ring networks.
Additionally, the Farallon family of hardware and software routers will
allow MessagePad users access to multiprotocol internetworks, including
remote tunneling through worldwide TCP/IP networks. This facility will
give a traveling MessagePad user in Boston the ability connect to his or
her desktop Macintosh computer in Tokyo on the other side of a TCP/IP
internet tunnel.
August MessagePad Promotion
This week at MACWORLD Expo in Boston, Farallon is distributing a special
offer to the first buyers of Newton MessagePads. Customers who purchase
a MessagePad during the month of August qualify to receive a free
PhoneNET StarConnector (a US$17.99 value). Interested customers should
complete the invitation included with the offer and mail or fax it to
Farallon headquarters in Alameda, Calif. StarConnectors will be rushed
out by return mail. The offer is also available from Farallon Customer
