The February mission of the shuttle Discovery will
feature two historic events: a rendezvous with the Rus-
sian space station Mir, and a Coca-Cola taste test.

Several astronauts on the mission will sample Coke
from a high-tech device called the "Fluids Generic Bio-
processing Analysis", or, more simply, the "Coca-Cola
Space Dispenser-Monitor" The soft drink will be less
  carbonated than its earthbound variety.

Coca-Cola, headquartered in Atlanta, insists the
$750,000 it has invested in this experiment is not just a
publicity stunt. The company believes that the dispenser
being tested on the mission could have far-reaching
applications in biology and technology as a way of effi-
  ciently dispensing liquids in microgravity.

This will not be the first time that Coke has flown in
space. It previously flew on the shuttle Challenger in
1985, along with its rival Pepsi. In 1991 cosmonauts
aboard Mir also sampled the popular beverage as part of
  an experiment.
