One option to reduce the amount of spam might be to make the list a
Mailman list (see http://web.mit.edu/lists/mailman/index.html) and have
all non-list member email bounced.  There are other list configuration
options that would make such a transition pretty much painless, but
since there isn't much IS support yet I'm not sure what they are.

The major disadvantage of switching to Mailman is that there would have
to be at least one list moderator.  The current list owner is the user
pug, but since the list is public, I don't think she's had to do much
moderating.  Still, the amount work for the moderator would likely
depend on the list's configuration options.

Just for the hell of it, I've created the NEW public list humour@mit.edu
Strictly for British humouououour, whatever that means.

You should be able to blanche yourself to it within a few hours.
