"First it was over the Internet. Then MIT techies heard rumors.
Finally, it hit the license commission.
Now it's been confirmed. Mary Chung Restaurant, a legend around the
institute, is planning to reopen in Central Square.
An institution for 11 years, Mary Chung served a heavily MIT crowd
with her Szechaun recipes until the restaurant's lease ran out in
1991. The restaurant, formerly located in Bioran space at 447 Mass.
Ave., will be reopening across from the current home of Crystal
Seafood Restaurant at 460 Mass. Ave. Crystal sold the business to
Chung, said Sarah Gallop in community relations at MIT. The university
owns the building.
Chung has been looking for a new site in Central Square since the old
restaurant closed, said Thomas Chung, her son who will help run the
eatery. If approved, the restaurant will have 96 seats and will be
similar to the old spot, said Chung.
Although a lease has not yet been signed, there should be no problems,
said Chung, who lives with his mother in Waltham. Gallop said the
restaurant is expected to open August 1. A license commission hearing
is scheduled for June 21."
