I think that there is about to be a free one, based on PostGreSQL
(http://www.postgresql.org), AppGEN
(http://www.man.ac.uk/~whaley/ag/appgen.html) and either SendMail
(http://www.sendmail.org) or qmail (http://www.qmail.org) and Apache
(http://www.apache.org). If there is, it will be announced on COLA
(news:comp.os.linux.announce) and FreshMeat (http://freshmeat.net). I
think I'll call it SeeMail.

Many folks seem to have an interest in weakening the way fair-use
doctrine is interpreted, and from what I hear, they're having some
measure of success. The most recent round of revisions to the
copyright laws did weaken it, to the dismay of a number of academics
who have depended on fair-use for teaching/research. In addition,
there are proposed UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) revisions on the
table which would allow contracts for software that can prohibit some
of what appears to be implied by copyright law at the moment - for
example, the provisions of fair use that apply to reviewing for
publication.

Hi there. I've a little problem comparing strings.
let's say we have these two variables:
$str1 = "test";
$str2 = "test";
and let's say we can compare them within an if statement:
if ($str1 == $str2) {
bla bla
}
I've found THIS DOESN'T work!!
let's have a look to this piece of code:
print "$row[0] \n";
print "$password \n";
if ($row[0] == $password) {
print "\n\n the password DO match!!";
}
and let's see what it outputs:

There is a java IRC client somewhere on the IBM site. Unfortunately, it
appears they've removed the link to it that was on the Undernet site, so
you'll have to hunt it down. It was a bit buggy, but usuable.
Then again, I'm not quite sure if this is

I see nothing in here that says "this is supposed to run in a browser" (as
it seems the responses assumed, and this is not a Web newsgroup anyway),
so why not provide the client with ircII, mIRC, ircle, sirc, or one of the
other IRC clients out there? Why should a protocol that inherently needs
a constant connection (IRC) be done over a protocol that doesn't support
it (HTTP)? Why should web browsers be the end-all of Internet

Much as I agree with you.... I think the client want to be able to click on a
link with Netscape, and be taken to a webpage, and that page/frameset acts
like an IRC, with realtime update. Personally I think he's mad, but he's not
my client, and I was only asking to see if I could help my friend.
Thanks for the input, I shall relay it to my colleague, Java isn't something
he has used, but Perl is, hence the posting here. Perl.com has a IRC module
for Perl, but I haven't investiageted it yet, and it's still in beta.
Again, thanks for the input.

Is there some special reason that the CGIs for the calendar scripts
aren't in your cgi-bin directory (or a subdirectory therein)? Many Web
servers won't execute CGI scripts outside of certain designated
directories, either a server wide cgi-bin or a user's individual
cgi-bin directory.
Once you move them to a proper cgi-bin directory, you'll likely need
to edit the scripts so the directory settings in calendar.setup point
the right place.

Well, at a minimum you need Perl. You may or may not need a web server.

Perl download info is available on http://www.perl.com/.
I'm not in the habit of recommending Win32 web servers for Perl

Randal, I thought the whole purpose of the "local" construct was to RETAIN
the value from the enclosing scope in a "localized" _copy_ of the value. Why
on earth would it undef the variable? $/ is a perl "global" intialized during
perl startup. It is _not_ "undef" by default when "declared", as it has
already been declared, in effect, by the time our scripts start. I believe
your statement is misleading, and the example code would work as desired.
TMTOWTDI. Personally, I use: local $/ = undef; to keep it on one line, but
Lack has certainly not misunderstood his code's purpose nor is it unnecessary
as you claim. I doubt it would work if changed per your instruction.

I'm glad this newsgroup helped. I think that if you steer clear of
abbreviations things will come out right. And even abbreviations might
work. Try "this sentence is about dr. no." for example. Two out of
three is 'mostly right' :-)
At the risk of slight overkill, I observe that sentences can not only be
quoted but can also be bracketed in various ways. This small refinement
takes that into account:
s/(^\s*|[.?!][])}"']*\s+[[({"']*)([a-z])/$1\u$2/gs;
Trap for the unwary: As written, the order of the characters in the
second character class is significant!
(And the algorithm would fail if the above two sentences were presented
entirely in lower case. As I said, this is fun.)

Hi Emanuel
I would suggest reconsidering your project ... to be able to use perl
you have to meet very high standards:
1. You should be able to use search engines like yahoo or something
and typing strange words like "perl" or "webserver", and then scanning
the results, eventually finding www.perl.com, www.activestate.com or
another URL for perl ... it's not easy!
2. You should be able to scan this news group for similar questions
... or even use an archive like www.dejanews.com.
3. There are a lot of FAQ's and articles around ... almost impossible
to find at:
http://cpan.perl.org/doc/FAQs/
http://cpan.perl.org/
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/
http://cpan.perl.org/doc/FAQs/FAQ/html/perlfaq.html
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/doc/FAQs/FAQ/html/perlfaq.html
4. And if you're still not discouraged to ask questions here, I will
warn you: There are a few awe-inspiring cracks around here, watching
every single word with their critical minds, and answering questions
mostly with something horrible like:
- Wrong news group, your question is not a perl question (they are
picky with you: if I don't find the start button of my computer in
order to run a perl program, then to ask where to push _is_ definitely
a perl question ... isn't it?)
- RTFM (I'm not a native speaker of English, but the "F" stands for
something very indecent as far as i know...)
Well, that's enough. Maybe you get some hints this way from another
newbie, watching the threads here for a couple of weeks, finding a lot
of his questions answered in the postings here to others, and learning
a lot from the cracks here around, sharing their knowledge and
experience freely ... even to sometimes clueless newbies like me, even
to stupid questions, if you don't expect that your problems are solved
for you without effort. Thanks to all of them here - it's really
something great!
Hope this helps!

That's right.
> Where can I download theses and what do I have to do ?
There's a beta Apache server that runs on Win32 now. I haven't tried it
yet. Why not? Well, I am not in any hurry to try pre-beta crashware.
I'll try the GA version out. But mainly because I use the Personal Web
Server with FrontPage 98. If you don't want to fork out the big bucks
for FP98 (I didn't have to since I'm in the MSDN program), wait for
Windows 98 which will include the PWS.
But even if you get an offline testing evironment set up,
you will still have to deal with differneces between your ISP
and your rigged test setup, which can be substantial.
You might want to install Linux and Apache and mimmic your
ISP exactly.

I hope so.

People like to apologize, don't they?

Sending wrond mailproperities isn't the end of the world.

The beta Apache isn't that bad. I've been running it quite
successfully on NT for several weeks.

Micro$oft's PWS is freely downloadable from their web site. They even
make a verion of the NT Option Pack for Win95 which includes a Win95
version of IIS4.

Exactly.

How to do you know that the poster's ISP uses Apache on Linux?

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
