I want to make my perl scripts into executable files aka ".exe" files. Is
there a way to do this?

Seems like you would have something better to do with your life than to try

The question was "is there a way". I answered it. The next question

Me? I really like the way people come to a newsgroup and act like
the world is there to do research for them. Took me 3 seconds at a
search engine to get that link. The OP could have done the same, and
in fact _should_ have done the same.

So do I.

I am in a continual quandary as to which clp.misc postings to
open up and actually read.

There are too many of them each day!

I cannot read them all.

I must find some way of limiting which ones I will read.

Having folks identify themselves for ignoration is very helpful to me.

Thanks you guys.

I did perform a search through various search engines and nothing turned up
that would let me know if it could be done, let alone show me how to do it.
I don't post to newsgroups until I exhaust every option. I don't like
sitting around waiting and hoping someone will offer assistance to a
problem.

Seems like you sit on your rear end day in and out just waiting for the
opportunity to harass someone. Again I could care less what your pitiful
little mental problems are, if need be I will post again.

I don't have time to enter your questions into www search engines all
day, but that didn't seem to stop you from asking me (or anyone else
who would have responded) to do just that for you. Your lack of
courtesy was repaid in kind.

1. I am not playing king of the hill. If you read any of my posts,
you will see that I am but a student, here to learn and enjoy Perl.
I just don't appreciate abject laziness (bad laziness, as it is).
Your post was the bad kind of lazy.

2. In truth, I have absolutely nothing better to do than what I am
doing the moment I am doing it. If I had anything better to do,
why would I remain doing what I had been doing?

Consider that these people sit in their dark, quiet rooms monitoring the
newsgroups fourteen hours a day... Sexual frustration is probably the least of
his problems.

I think I know how you feel. You probably asked a few people around the
office, used a couple search engine and came here as a last resort. I
figure that that's what a lot of people do before coming in here and asking
a question. The thing is, though, many people who use Perl are completely
unaware of the FAQ that is included in every Perl installation. You can
peruse it anytime since it is sitting on your harddrive. Try typing these
at a prompt:

perldoc perldoc
perldoc perl
perldoc perlfaq

If you really want a thorough treatment of the docs, see Tom Phoenix's "How
to find the Perl FAQ" (or something to that effect) auto-post that appears
here every week or so.

On top of all the documentation that is provided with Perl, there are sites
devoted to answering questions about the language and usage of the language.
Try www.perlfaq.com. I bet my left shoe that your question is answered
there. So this is another resource for you to check out before resorting to
begging for answers on a newsgroup. Perl has some of the best documentation
available for any language.

I need to write a perl script that will act as a CGI that will be used to

I'm using the linux command dbmmanage /home/etc/passwords/pdbm adduser

Is it possible to write a perl script to automate this?

Sure it's possible -- that kind of stuff is one of the things for which
Perl is great. Start with:

   perldoc perlop

and look at the section (under "quote and quote-like operators") for the
"qx" operator. That will let you run any Linux command from Perl and
collect the command's standard output in a Perl variable. Common usage
of the qx operator is to use the "backticks" form:

   $output=`linux_command_goes_here`;

The "backticks" are also known as "grave accents", and are typically
found on the keyboard key to the left of the "one" key.

I need a proxy client module to serve as an HTTP tunnel for debugging

know of one?

Thanks,

P.S. One of the scripts in the Perl Cookbook prints out the browser's
http to STDOUT, but it cannot conduct a 2-way conversation. And the
T. Meadowcroft's HTTPSniffer script can be used as a proxy client only
if there is a proxy server already running in the system.

How do you know it is Perl?

It says "CGI" a lot, but mentions Perl only to say that it is
written in C, with a Perl front end.

CGI does not equal Perl.

CGI programs can be written in nearly any language.

You appear to have found one written in C.

And newsgroups are for _discussion_ anyway.

You should use a search engine for searching, and newsgroups
for discussion.

Errr, I think a place named rinkworks has the code to do this :-)

They even say that most of it is "public domain" (but I expect
they may be abusing the term).

What did they say when you asked them?

What makes you think it's a Perl script? I can't see anything on the
website that mentions Perl. The original jive translater was written with
lex.

| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
