They are using Javascript to tell you this, most likely.

Subject: How to get last dir from path???????????
Message-Id: <7tvtr2$567$1@nnrp1.deja.com>

How can I parse out the last dir. from a path? For example I have the
following in an array:

 .\alpha\prod\debug\exe\extsw\MedCom_src
 .\alpha\prod\debug\exe\extsw\MedCom_src\AT
 .\alpha\prod\debug\exe\extsw\MedCom_src\AT\genericmain
 .\alpha\prod\debug\exe\extsw\MedCom_src\AT\genericmain\src
 .\alpha\prod\debug\exe\extsw\MedCom_src\AT\gmaincompmfc

How would I get:

MedCom_src
AT
genericmain
src
gmaincompmfc

into a different array? Thank you.

There are several ways. Here's a relatively advanced (i.e., compact)
way. It can also be done with a regex instead of split(), and with
foreach() and push() instead of map().

  my @last_dirs = map +(split /\\/)[-1], @dirs;

I would suggest reading about these functions in perlfunc.

You might also consider that forward-slashes are perfectly good path
separators (except for external commands) and might make some Perl code
cleaner.

That's the correct answer. There's something too smug about that $x=2;

Except that there wasn't any "my" in that code!

According to "Learning Perl" (Llama) chapter 4, the loop variable in
foreach is always local to the foreach, and it always reverts to its
previous value (or undef) after the loop. The same information in
different words in Camel, 2.6.4.3

I didn't know this, and i'm glad i know it now!

Well, maybe. In the system i'm using (AIX 4.3 with IBM's compiler) it
turned out to be libperl.a. (I took all the default answers from
Configure, except the one which asks if you want to build a shared
lib). This is for Perl's stable version. The experimental version built
libperl.o as a shared lib.

In this system, perl turned out to be 157,594 bytes long. The shared
library is called libperl.a and it's 1,288,372 bytes.

Perl's load time is not significantly impacted by having a shared lib.
Sometimes, if you run perl multiple times in quick sucession, the first
one will take about 1 second to load, the others are instant. I guess
it must remain loaded for a couple minutes after perl exits, in case
it's needed again. Or whatever.

Gotcha. I've no experience at all with AIX, though I've heard it's
different in many ways from other Unices.

Hmmm. Configure definitely warns about slowdowns. On the other hand, I
know AIX resolves its symbols at link time instead of runtime (like
VMS does) so it may be that you pay the price when perl's built rather
than when perl's invoked.

Maybe time to haul out perlbench on the linux box and see what it
has to say for itself.

Subject: Question about AlarmCall
Message-Id: <s06vr1lhh1s57@corp.supernews.com>

Regarding the AlarmCall module: Can it possibly take a normal statement, not a
function, as an argument? Below, it seems it primarly takes functions as
arguments. What is

@result = alarm_call($timeout,$code_reference,@args);

Sys::AlarmCall provides a straightforward function call to use the alarm
handler. It also handles the logic which allows nested time out calls if
timeout calls are run through the alarm_call() functions.

The main advantages of Sys::AlarmCall are that:

1. simple calls, e.g.

    @result = &func(@args); #Normal function call with '&'
    $result = func(@args);; #Normal function call
    @result = &$code_reference(@args);
    @result = $obj->func(@args); #Object method call

become simple calls:

    @result = alarm_call($timeout,'&func',@args);
    $result = alarm_call($timeout,'func',@args);
    @result = alarm_call($timeout,$code_reference,@args);
    @result = alarm_call($timeout,'->func',$obj,@args);

Subject: SGML documentation
Message-Id: <slrn806tur.r9s.bmccoy@moebius.foiservices.com>

Is there any documentation for any of the SGML modules? The ones I have
installed, such SGML::Parser and SGML::DTD, seem to have no documentation
associated with them.

My problem is this:

I have a bunch of drug reaction data that has been provided to me as ASCII
text with '$' used as a column delimiter, and as SGML that complies with a
DTD standard developed by the International Conference for Harmonisation
(the specs for which I do have available). I've never done much with
SGML, so my dilemma is which will be the easier to program and ultimately
get into my database server (getting it *into* the database is easy -- I'm
using PostgreSQL via Pg.pm-- it's getting the data extracted and
organized)? I have done lots of stuff with delimited files, so that's easy
enough to do. I just don't know how well parsing the SGML will make my
life easier, since the data definition is built into the document
specification.

Here's a sample of the SGML:

 <ichicsr lang="en">
   <ichicsrmessageheader>
     <messagetype>ICSR</messagetype>
     <messageformatversion>2.0</messageformatversion>

       <primarysource>
       </primarysource>
       <sender>
       </sender>
       .
       .
       .
       <drug>
         <drugcharacterization>2</drugcharacterization>
         <medicinalproduct>Captopril(Capoten)</medicinalproduct>
         <drugstartdateformat>102</drugstartdateformat>
         <drugstartdate>19970430</drugstartdate>
       </drug>
       </patient>
       </safetyreport>
 </ichicsr>

Any recommendations here? Are any of the SGML modules capable of dealing
with something like this?
