seeing as you obviously can't read - and have no speach synthesis device
- I'm not sure what use you thought the usenet would be to you
groan .. RTFM .. believe it or not - how to open files is in there
somewhere .. assuming that you've installed perl on your Windoze machine
there - check out the directory that you installed perl in for a file
called html\index.html .. open it and begin reading
if you're using perl on a UNIX machine then man perl will be a good
starting place .. man perlfunc if you're really lazy

The problem seems to be that you don't know how to peruse the docs...
Since you're using MS Outlook, I gather that you have the Activestate
Perl port? Then open the file "perlfunc.html", and search for the entry
for "open". That seems logical enough to me. On other platforms, do a
"perlfunc -f open" on the command line. (On a Mac, type "open," in a
code window, put the cursor on it, and press command-H)
Oh, BTW, there are online demoes for the Hangman game available. See the
website for mod_perl: <http://www.modperl.com/hangman.html>. Sorry to
spoil the fun!
Bart.

Noone knows how to open a file in Perl. Noone here ever reads the manual.

To extract just the number portion you can use this simple regex:
$num = $url; $num =~ s/.+=//; print $num;

You might also want to pick up "Learning Perl" with lama on the cover.
O'Reilly has a title called "Learning Perl on Win32 systems", as well as
"Perl Resource Kit for Win32".

I specifically did _NOT_ post to the OS specific newsgroups because I
have seen the jihads resulting from such queries. The various
comp.os.*.advocacy newsgroups are filled with testosterone impaired
zealots that live for such posts to waste bandwidth with
tomes&diatribes of why their particular OS can beat up everyone else's
OS.
What I was looking for a simple adult statement in 25 words or less
that simply says that FreeBSD has these advantages/disadvantage &
Linux has these advantages/disadvantages or they are the same since
they both compile the same source code & are UNIX clones.

Floyd Morrissette writes ..
>...But I always thought it would best to ask
>perhaps hundreds of people to get different ideas.
the attitude that you express here Floyd is one of the most annoying to
regular visitors to the newsgroups .. hopefully I will cover the reasons
for this in the remainder of this followup
>I know I am going to get a bad rep here but I would like to state that I
>thought newsgroups were a place especially for beginners to ask some
>pros questions.
no one minds being asked a question .. all anyone asks is that (1) the
beginner gives things a go first and (2) they ask the question with the
people who are answering it in mind (ie. give examples and information to
make their question clear) .. both of these conditions are part of the
same reason that your original paragraph (above) is annoying .. more as I
go
>It seems the answer for all questions could be "go read the docs or
>faqs" for I find it hard to believe that there are many questions that
>are not covered somewhere.
not at all .. but the answer to questions asked by beginners is more
often than not already covered in the documentation .. the same
documentation that the beginner copied and installed on their own machine
(or someone did on their behalf) .. all for a reason
ok .. so here we go
so what makes most beginner's posts annoying - thereby attracting flamage
?? .. what attitude were you expressing in your first paragraph ?
it's all about respect .. respect for other people's time and respect for
the effort that other people put in .. as an experienced usenet
participant I am thoroughly disgusted with the beginner who comes first
to usenet .. before reading the files that came with the program ..
before looking up a manual .. before trying something out .. before doing
anything
posting to usenet should be a last resort .. maybe a second last resort
if you don't have enough money to afford a book .. maybe a third last
resort if your internet connection doesn't allow web browsing .. it
should never be your first port of call
someone sat down and wrote some pretty damn excellent manuals for perl ..
and they give them away free of charge .. a lot of time and expense are
given to you free .. including the language .. and access to all the
modules .. but it's not enough that someone is given everything and the
instructions on how to use it .. you want to be able to get interractive
examples to your precise problem as well
the attitude that you expressed in your first paragraph is one of "my
problem is so important that it deserves hundreds of people's time" ..
you're just not that important Floyd .. and the attitude that you (or
your problem) is that important makes experienced usenet participants
sick
the conditions that I mentioned above are part of this same deal ..
people post shit like "I want to make a hotmail type web based mail thing
in perl, where do I start?" .. what the fuck !?!? .. do you people think
that someone pays people to answer the questions in this newsgroup ?
essentially that sort of request is saying .. "I don't have time to learn
this silly language, so I want you - who's time is not as important as
mine - to do all the legwork for me." .. of course this sort of request
is going to get flamed .. ESPECIALLY .. in a language and community that
already has a tonne of existing modular code - ready to use - mostly
fully documented
AND .. that has full documentation that you can literally learn the
language from - included - and presented in a very usable format
but noooooo .. that's not good enough .. "I've just installed perl and I
want to re-create hotmail, can someone post an example of how I'd do
this." .. fuck off
lastly .. not only do these sorts of questions indicate a lack of respect
for the people who are in here with the knowledge .. it also shows a lack
of respect for the time of the other newbie battlers who are trying to
understand and work things out for themselves
it makes it difficult to sift through all the crap searching for someone
who's actually asking a worthwhile question .. a question to which the
answer isn't lying just under the surface of the included documentation
.. a question that isn't solved by RTFM
if you had all the knowledge in the world about perl .. and you spent
some of your time contributing to a newsgroup such as this one .. and
there were two questions in front of you
(Q1)"
I'm trying to do xyz so that I can do abc to efg. I've tried Blah::Blah
and Blob and Blank and Dank packages, and I've also tried doing it myself

having no luck. I've read the perlre and perlmod and been through CPAN a
few times. I'm getting qrs errors in the following code.

that really needs to be out today so if someone could just show me.
"
which one would you answer ?
now consider for a moment that in a day there might be 10-15 questions
very similar to Q2 .. some exactly the same .. all asking questions
answered in page one of the manual
now .. add to that people asking questions about Apache, CGI, UNIX, DOS
Command Shells, etc. etc. .. tell me when you're sick of hearing people
ask for you to hold their hand just long enough for them to get paid for
the work they've got to have done tomorrow
ironically .. answering Q1 above might take an hour .. Q2 would
definitely take less than 30 seconds .. wanna put odds on which one gets
answered ?
I think that paints a pretty good picture .. I know it sounds like it -
but I'm sure that I don't speak for everyone .. although I'd be surprised
if it wasn't most

Subject: nmake questions - Win32
Message-Id: <7ll0pm$cpb$1@news2.ee.net>
I'm trying to use Perl/PHP/mysql as my dev suite for a web server/database
op I'm working on. Since there are mods that I need to build that can't be
installed via ppm or CPAN, I have to use nmake.
Can someone point me in the right direction for using nmake from Msoft for
my make program with Perl Win32?...I have the make=nmake in config.pm but am
unsure as to what other info should be in that .pm file or where the nmake
program should be located, switches if any I should be using, what should I
be looking for after the make process, what gets moved to where, etc...I
have been using different searches to try to locate Win32 and Perl info but
haven't been too successful with this topic. I also don't really understand
what the @INC means and why I have to place files in \lib or \site\lib when
the path is already defined to the system.....
Also, looking for opinions of the PRK for Win32....seems kind of expensive
.... don't mind the expense if the materials are concise, useful and timely.
Thanks
Bob

Most of them can be installed using ppm.
DBI
DBD-mysql
DBD::CSV
etc.

I don't anything when I need to install a module, its simple:
perl makefile.pl #on win32, case doesn't matter
nmake
nmake test #I rarely do this
nmake install
thats it!
but I haven't been able to compile any .C or any .XS code through nmake!
it correctly installs stuff where they should be installed.

I have absolutely no idea about this.

I've written a script which grabs news postings. However, I'm at a loss
as to how I should handle binary files. How would I pull out and save
an mp3 or image file preceded by text?
Thanks,
Phil

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
