okay.. not to start sounding completely bogus.. 
but what exactly was wrong with the original scheme?
  the only complaint I have against any of the schemes
is that we KEEP CHANGING them..
  it really is getting stupid... if you don't like typing the
full machtype name, notice that most real lockers have a symlink
from bin to something like .bin.@sys (or bin/@sys).  this should
make you type the least anyway...
