A couple of weeks ago a change in the nfs-afs translator Ni was made to only
allow connections from the Cray. This change was made at the request of
the Cray users to help alleviate performance problems they were experiencing.

This note is to inform you that the configuration on Ni has been reverted
back to its former state; it now allows connections from any client.

The nfs-afs translators have always been considered a minimally supported
service. The translators don't scale well for our environment, and simply
require too much staff time to maintain. We provide minimal resources
in maintaining the translator, and don't encourage production use except
in very specific circumstances such as the Cray.

The translators run on equipment that will obsolete as of July 1. Both Ni
and Atalanta will be in service at least until July 1. A long term strategy
for the translators will be reviewed this spring.

If you have any questions about the recent change to the translator, or
any other operational aspect of the Athena environment, please feel
free to contact me.
