Athena or DCNS or IS or whoever is is that runs the AFS->NFS
translators, in their infinite wisdom, have shut of ni.mit.edu from
the hundred or so Resnet users who use the translators for various
systems. atalanta is completely unable to handle the extra load (it
was completely unable to handle the load it was getting in the first
place.) It now drops connections at an unbelievable rate.
The current setup on Keesh sort of depends on read access to /afs for
various things. Since it's become nearly impossible to log into
Keesh, Linux development has ground to a halt. (I personally haven't
logged into Keesh or touched any linux-dev stuff for nearly a month.)
Problems are being reported and not being fixed and people are
complaining.
Here's the point: we should run an afs->nfs translator on Charon (or
somewhere) and export it _to Keesh only_. It should not, NOT, NOT,
_NOT_ be a supported service, but it can aid in a supported service
(linux-dev).
I'll even volunteer to help set it up/maintain it (oh no, I'm
volunteering for server maintenance.)
I understand that Charon all ready has a rediculously high load, but
this would be rediculously useful, so it balances out.
Please let me know if there's any reason we can't or shouldn't do
this. If there's no serious objections, please tell me how to do
this. :-)
Have a nice day.
