I think that you overestimate the resources available to SIPB to
commit to this project. I sent mail earlier but failed to cc
linux-dev, so I will cover that ground again.

I think that SIPB should begin turning our efforts to a 7.1 installer
as soon as possible, rather than wasting effort on patching the 6.2
installer to support a problem that relatively few users run into. If
someone is willing to deal, than a documentation update on the install
one-sheet would be useful. But hacking new features into 6.2 is no
longer valuable, at this time.
