Angie and Jonathon suggested some revisions to the draft I posted a
couple of days ago. Below is the latest version. I'll be sending this
to linux-help and linux-announce on Wed, 30 May.

Alex.

As of June 15, 2001, SIPB will no longer support the Linux-Athena
distribution based on RedHat 5.2 and Athena 8.2. If you are running
this version, SIPB recommends you reinstall with the latest version,
details of which are available at http://www.mit.edu/~linux/
Unfortunately, reinstalling is the only upgrade method available. If
you do decide to reinstall a machine, please take care to back up any
important data on it.

RedHat 5.2 is quite obsolete, and it is likely that security holes will
continue to be discovered in its software. If you intend to continue
using a machine installed with 5.2-based Linux-Athena, it is important
that you keep yourself apprised of such discoveries, as SIPB will not be
releasing patches to compensate for them. To do so, subscribe to the
mailing list redhat-watch-list@redhat.com by sending mail to
redhat-watch-list-request@redhat.com with the subject 'subscribe'.

No new software will be tested for compatibility with Redhat 5.2, and as
it is updated existing locker software will stop working on machines
running this distribution. Administering a Redhat 5.2 machine is likely
to be quite onerous, and we strongly recommend that you update to the
latest version of Linux-Athena instead.

If you need help reinstalling your machine, please call SIPB at x3-7788
or email linux-help@mit.edu.
