The copy I'm working on is in ~alex_c/Public/desupport. Below is the
current draft. Comments are welcome.

Alex.

As of <date>, SIPB will no longer be supporting the Linux-Athena
distribution based on RedHat 5.2. If you would like to keep your
computer up to date with the latest revisions to Linux-Athena, you may
wish to reinstall your machine with the latest version based on RedHat
6.2 (see http://www.mit.edu/~linux/ for details about the latest
version, and /mit/sipb/doc/rh-net-install.ps for instructions on
reinstalling.) Unfortunately, reinstalling is the only straightforward
upgrade method available. If you do decide to reinstall a machine,
please take care to back up any important data on it.

RedHat 5.2 is quite obsolete, but it is likely that security holes will
continue to be discovered in software included in it. If you intend to
continue using a machine installed with 5.2-based Linux-Athena, it will
be important that you keep yourself apprised of such discoveries, as
SIPB will not be releasing patches to compensate for them. One way to
do so is to subscribe to the mailing list redhat-watch-list@redhat.com
by sending mail to redhat-watch-list-request@redhat.com with the subject
'subscribe'.

New software for Athena will not be tested for compatibility with
5.2-based Linux-Athena, so as time goes by it will steadily become less
useful to you unless you are prepared to build software for it yourself.
Administering your machine in this fashion is likely to be quite
onerous, and we strongly recommend that you update to the latest version
of Linux-Athena instead.

If you need help reinstalling your machine, please call SIPB at x3-7788
or email linux-help@mit.edu.

Alex.
