OLC has been trying to install Linux/Athena (in the process of converting it
into a bleeding edge linux machine) onto a Dell Optiplex GX400 with a
3C905C-TX (SCAR.MIT.EDU). The I/S installer (3c905c-tpo.fl) recognizes the card
but never brings up the network, and eventually rebooted after timing
out on /afs. The SIPB installer gives the following error on VT-4

<6> 3c59x.c:v0.99H 11/17/98 Donald Becker ......
<6> eth0: 3com 3C905C Tornado at0xec00 ***INVALID CHECKSUM 0025 *** 00:b0:d0:e4:4f:58 IRQ11

We got the machine to install vanilla redhat 7.0 from the network without
any problems, from where /proc/pci gives the
following information about the card:

  Bus 2, device 12, function 0:
Ethernet controller: 3Com Unknown device (rev 120).
      Vendor id=10b7. Device id=9200.
Medium devsel. IRQ 11. Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=10.Max Lat=10.
      I/O at 0xec00 [0xec01].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xff1ffc00 [0xff1ffc00].

dmesg suggests that it is using 3com's linux drivers:

3Com 3c90x Version 1.0.0i 1999 <linux_drivers@3com.com>

lspci lists the following:
02:0c.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX [Fast Etherlink] (rev 78)

Any suggestions? Would it be possible to install Athena 9.0.0 alpha (noticing the
existence of control-9.0 layered-9.0.0 and list-9.0.0 in /afs/dev/system/rhlinux)
at this point?

Arun
