As probably many of your are aware (our apologies), there was a nasty bug
introduced into the SIPB linux installer in the last week. In particular,
the installer got broken such that the user was presented with the
"package groups selection list" at which point, many obvious choices
would result in a broken system with many of the wrong RPMs installed.
A common symptom of this problem is getting "kerberos error 57" upon
attempting to login, but there are a few other forms of the failure,
depending on your selections at the package groups screen.
If you (or a user who you are helping) are in this state, we recommend
you reinstall. If you're savvy about linux, you could also fix the
system by making the list of installed RPMs correspond to that in
/afs/athena/system/rhlinux/control/list-8.4.20 (but this is in the
pointy-hats-only category).
We've managed to back out the problematic changes to the installer, and
are taking steps to insure that this sort of problem won't occur again.
In particular, we've established procedures for tracking changes and
propagating changes to the server, which should allow us to stay better
informed about what changes are production, and which should allow us to
back out future changes quickly and easily, should problems become known.
Our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
